Has the place where you grew up ever been in a movie?

Idaho doesn’t seem to attract much attention from Hollywood, so movies shot on location in my home state, much less my home town, are few and far between.

That said, Bronco Billy, which came out in the early 1980s, not only had some scenes shot in my home town of Eagle, Idaho, but also includes a shot of the drugstore my parents still own and operate.

I don’t know about in movies, but the palce I grew up appears in every eppisode of The Office. Slough, if you can survive there you can survive anywhere.

The film “Powder” was filmed in the next town over about 5 miles from my house. It was in Manvel, TX right next to the little town of Alvin where I grew up.

I actually got to meed Jeff Goldblum. Really tall was about the only impression that I had then as he wasn’t that famous.

Er, ah, ahem…

I grew up in the area where Deliverance was filmed.

[sub]and nobody ever told me to squeal like a pig.[/sub]

I was born in (I swear to the gods) Hicksville, Ohio. While Hicksville was never in a movie, the next town over, Sherwood, was the setting for “Heathers”.

The real town is nothing like the one depicted in the movie. It’s a very small farm town.

Remember the first installment of “The Bachelor”? The lady who “won”, Amanda Marsh, grew up where I’ve lived my whole life and still live, Chanute Kansas. It showed parts of the town as well as the now-defunct Country Club.

If you happen to catch the Martin and Osa Johnson special on the history channel, there’s a little bit of Chanute in there as well. We’re home to the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum. It’s actually really interesting.

White Palace - an “older-woman” romance movie starring James Spader and Susan Sarandon, was filmed in and around St. Louis.

The writer (Glenn Savan) was actually from my hometown of Clayton, (a suburb of St. Louis), and threw in a bunch of local flavor into the book. Not so much the movie.

However, the external shots of James Spader’s apartment building are in Clayton next door to the house in which I grew up. You can actually see my old bedroom window for three seconds or so.

I grew up in and live in Lancaster PA, a small city smack dab in the middle of Amish country. I can claim that at least 3 Hollywood productions have been shot here.

Witness - Kelly McGillis was a regular customer of mine for awhile at a local mini-mart.

Girl, Interrupted - The exteriors of the scenes meant to be in Boston when they visit Britney Murphy and Winona goes to the store were shot a few blocks from my house.

Beloved - A local cultural museum was transformed into a town for this production. It was a first visit for Oprah and a second one for Danny Glover.

A personal aside here… a local business deals in vintage clothing and has supplied costuming for several other productions, and Treat Williams is an alumnus of a local college too…

Hoosiers was filmed in my hometown of Indianapolis. The final game was shot in Hinkle Field House, which is a real college stadium and was indeed the sight of the Indiana High School state finals the year the “real” Hickory high school (Milan) won the championship. Blue Chips and Eight Men Out were also largely filmed in Indianpolis area.

My college "hometown" of Bloomington is where Breaking Away was filmed. Its weird to see real shots of the campus and the city on film.

More about “Brubaker” and Ohio…some of it was shot at the state prison (not abandoned) in Chillicothe, Ohio, my hometown. I was in sixth grade, had never seen a Robert Redford movie, and wondered why various grownups were buzzing about Redford sightings at local restaurants.

jsgoddess, where are you from (if I may ask)? I know the movie was shot in various towns and prisons…Lucasville comes to mind.

I grew up in Hollywood, California.

I couldn’t even begin.

Except for one very direct one…“Re-Animator” was filmed in my best friend’s house.

Hi, E. Thorp.

I’m from between Bremen and Junction City, two tiny towns near Lancaster. They shut down a road near my house, Marietta Road, in order to film various trucks going down a huge hill nearby that led into Bremen. And they filmed at least some of the prison scenes at the pen in Junction City. If anyone has ever seen the movie, they might recognize this prison: http://www.graveaddiction.com/jcp.html

Looking at imdb.com, it seems there was another movie shot near here: “Green Grass of Wyoming.” 'Cause southeastern Ohio looks like Wyoming? I don’t think so!

Parts of Almost Famous were filmed in San Diego. I grew up not too far away from Cameron Crowe’s neighborhood.

“Urban Cowboy” was filmed near where I actually grew up. By then I’d moved into the big city.

I remember these & knew people who worked on some of them: “Paris, Texas” “Brewster McCloud” “Tin Cup” “Terms of Endearment” “Selena” & “Local Hero”

Special mention for “Last Night at the Alamo” by the late Eagle Pennell

& Extra special mention for “The Blues According to Lightnin’ Hopkins” filmed by Les Blank. He’s done many other fine films about “roots” music, often filmed in this part of the country (from Louisiana to the Border).

One scene from “In Cold Blood” was shot in the A&W drive-in at my home town, Great Bend, Kansas.

Anatomy of a Murder was filmed in and around my home town, long before I was born. Used to be that we had the star’s hand prints and signatures in cement in the cement on the main block of downtown. You can go to the Lumberjack Tavern - both the real one, where the actual murder took place (it’s a true story) and the one used for the film. I’ve had plenty of drinks and meals at the Thunder Bay Inn. The city courthouse was used for the courthouse scenes.

My parents remember when it was filming, and they used many locals as extras. My mother can point out her friends in various scenes!

The made-for-Showtime re-make of Kubrick’s Lolita was partially filmed in my city. All of the “hospital” scenes, including the one’s OUTSIDE the “hospital” are actually the hallway just outside the Journalism room of my old high school, where I spent all 4 years of my high school career developing a love of the written informative/opinionated word.
Also the motel they stay in around the same hospital scene is filmed in the poorer section of town, overlooking the Chevron refinery that sits right in the middle of the city off the freeway. You can see the refinery just beyond the motel in the scene where they pull up to it.
