Have to say that I like the new improved Banhammer

The op and Cicero make reference to recent events, so if one looks in ATMB one can see some recent announcements regarding bans/suspensions, one can draw conclusions that may or may not be relevant.

I agree with this. ISTM that the recently suspended newbie was trying to give as good as she got from the recently suspended old-timer, who was pushing the line for all he was worth, egging her on (intentionally or not, I won’t speculate) to cross the line. Good call on both of those. And the other banning? I’ve been wondering for a long time how such an obvious one-trick-troll (despite the jokes at troll’s expense about two tricks) even survived. There’s another one, too, just like the first (except for trick) who hasn’t been banned that I’m wondering if this new willingness to use the banhammer will hit. I rarely read that troll’s posts, because the people feeding the troll generally quote the only good parts, but I wonder why anyone even replies to the obvious trollery. Will we see another ban, soon? The world wonders.*

Umm, mods? Here’s the next banhammer target. He’s obviously a member of the Conspiracy of Keyboard Manufacturers, Big (pronounced ‘cock, me bite’)!

I was talking of specific bannings and I see others have been sent to the sin bin as well. Not that I had much to do at any time with the latest cannon fodder.

I wish I could say what I really feel in regards to recent actions by the mods. Maybe I can get away with “Whew! What a relief, even if if is temporary

But the old timer wasn’t banned for his response to the newbie, and he is by far not the only one to respond in such a manner in GD.

Plus people in the thread where the old timer was banned were admittedly trying to get him upset, which makes me not so happy with the decision. That and he didn’t do what the mod claimed, since libel would mean he knowingly made false statements, while his statement did follow from his precepts.

I just didn’t say anything because I do think he deserved it for previous behavior (more specifically, the lack of even an attempt at changing it.) I’d just feel like I was being pedantic, asking for his Warning to be changed to be for a different violation.

I’m so glad you guys brought it up in a way that I can mention it without asking for mod action.

The 30-day “standard suspension” is the result of a good bit of experimenting, and it seems to work out pretty well. It gives the residual anger a chance to boil off, and gives people a chance to think about whether they really want the persona they’ve been developing.

There have been a few “go home and spend the weekend sobering up” suspensions, several “come back in a few years when you’ve grown up” suspensions, and a number of voluntary “please suspend me until I contact you” deals. But those are exceptions to the rule.

Nah. You’re not on the ban list. You’re on the list for the drum roll comfy chair.

Oh, piss off.

In an imperfect world sometimes Al Capone goes to prison for tax evasion. I’ve learned to live with it

I’m afraid I don’t agree; the suspension of Diogenes (that is who we’re talking about, no?) should have been a banning, and it should have been a long time ago. Nothing against the guy, but I think he has been over the line for a long time, and the powers that be here don’t want to ban such a long-term, active poster, regardless of what he does. That’s probably not your best guide for rule enforcement.

AMEN

Oops, here comes the thread lock.

Nothing against Dio personally but I agree, he’s been breaking the rules for way too long (don’t be a jerk).

And PM!

Count me in as one who was shocked to see the suspension, but delighted that the mods finally did SOMETHING.

I am hopeful that this suspension is the step the mods needed to take before his outright ban that is right around the corner. I have no idea of his warning history, but this is the first suspension I remember him getting.

He’s not going to change, so if the mods stick by their guns, he should be suspended/banned very soon after reinstatement.

Was **New Deal Democrat **Black listed as well?

Agree completely.

It’s a good beginning, and I agree with Mods getting tougher on trolls. I’ve noticed it getting a bit thick the last few months and thought maybe I would vote with my wallet and drop down to Guest status when my subscription is up, as I’d rather be annoyed for free rather than pay for the privilege. But I still have a ways to go due to selecting the two-year option back in January. Will see how the troll situation is come 2013.

In the Mayan calender 2013 is the year of the troll. Don’t you keep up with these things?

The problem with Diogenes is that, when he’s not acting like a jerk, he’s an intelligent and interesting poster. The best solution would be for him to remain, and modify his behaviour - something he’s promised to do at least twice since I’ve been here, and has not done.

If this doesn’t happen, banning would be appropriate, but I believe that long-time posters should be given a chance to fix their behaviour.

He has been given chance after chance. His posting “style” has been discussed over and over. Mods have offered help in threads and supposedly by PM. When he derails a thread the advice is always, “Well just don’t respond to him”. But isn’t that really the same advice as DNFTT?

I agree with PlainJain.

I an trying to keep this in focus of the Mods actions rather than a specific action so that it can stay in this forum. If another poster had the same front, and the flood of posts on every imaginable topic, I would hope they would get banned.
