Helen Rogers (works a lot with Paul Hardcastle)
Annie Lennox, goddess of pop.
Plenty of the aforementioned folks too. Plus the french-canadian college student who used to come into the bookstore where I worked. I could chat with him for hours and his voice would make my knees weak.
The woman’s voice in the recorded announcements on Hong Kong’s MTR subway system. I could listen to that all day. Chinese with a slight edge of English poshness. And all that on a solid base of generic female “professional ice maiden” that you get at airports. I have a thing for that.
There’s a disk jockey on Georgia Public Radio whose name, I thought, was Sinnijin Flynn. Wonderful voice- proper English accent with just a trace of Mersey occasionally peeping through- and I had a major crush. I pictured him as an Anglo-Egyptian or Anglo-Indian tall, dark and handsome Alexander Siddig type.
Turns out he’s a pudgy very white middle aged Englishman, certainly not what I’d pictured, and what I’d thought was an Indian or Egyptian name (Sinnijin) was just a slightly misunderstood version of the English pronunciation of “St. John” (“Sin-JUN”), which somehow I’d never learned was pronounced that way.
The aforementioned Beth Gibbons.
Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star.
Sarah McLachlan.
Chan Marshall of Cat Power.
As a kid, and still to this day: Stevie Nicks.
Ben Gibbard, from Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service.
Also, David Attenborough. “March of the Penguins” was good, but Morgan Freeman just isn’t my choice when it comes to nature narration.
And on further reflection:
Tori Amos
Ani DiFranco
Sinead O’Connor
Yeah. I fall in love easily…
Sandy Denny. I’ve been in love with her voice ever since Who Knows Where the Time Goes?
Another vote for the aforementioned Beth Gibbons and Shirley Manson, plus Kelli Dayton, formerly of Sneaker Pimps.
Sure, lots of times. To list a few:
Patrick Stewart, Tori Amos, Christopher Lee, Donald Sutherland, Nina Simone, Tim Curry, and maybe at the top of the list, Howlin’ Wolf.
“SASHA”, the Danner Boot Customer Service Rep for my area. Trust me. Call Danner Boots right now and ask for Sasha, you’ll see!
… Man I used to call just to listen to her Away Message!!
guh! he does have a wonderful voice. Also Frank Langella, James Earl Jones and Vincent Price for spoken goodness.
Singing voice, Till Lindemann, William Warfield and Howard Keel.
Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington. Mmmmmm.
I was a switchboard operator back in the early 70s. A co-worker’s husband used to call every night to talk to her. He sounded like Ricardo Mantalbon…all sexy and foreign.
I finally met him. He looked like Wally Cox.
This happens to me with DJs all the time. I’d just rather not know what they look like. It’s too damn confusing.
On the NPR vein, Terri Gross’s voice is wonderfully rich and intimate, very sexy. I saw a photo of her once, and her looks don’t really do much for me, but what a voice!
Daniel
Cyd Vandenberg sounds hot enough to melt butter still in the fridge, but I’ll be damned if I can find a picture of her anywhere. Any help?
Margo Timmons (Cowboy Junkies) and the singer for Hem are also scrumptious sounding.
Neil Tennant.
The only voice I like more than that was Potter’s. I could have listened to that boy read the phone book.
Yes, we have a British thing going on, don’t we.
Sally Kellerman has a great voice. It’s somewhat husky but oh so feminine. She does the occasional documentary and sounds great doing so. Also, in her opening scene in Back to School she recites some romantic poetry that makes Rodney Dangerfield stand up and make a fool of himself. In this, Rodney and I are sympatico.
Appearance-wise, I’ve never really found her exceptionally attractive, but her voice. Mmm.
Alan Rickman. My stars. In Sense and Sensibility when he says “The air was full of spices” I get chills.
I can’t believe it took a page and a half before someone mentioned Alan Rickman. Dear sweet muffins, I love that man’s voice. In ANYTHING. Galaxy Quest, the Harry Potter movies, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy …
Uh, also. You’re all going to think I’m crazy, but … Bob Ross. You know, that painter guy with a 'fro? As a kid I used to watch his show just to hear his voice. I sat there for half an hour every day and watched him paint trees, is how much I loved that man’s voice.
And just recently I went to a Yankee game at Yankee stadium, and I love the voice of their announcer, who I’m told has been there since DiMaggio. I especially loved the way he says “Derek Jeet-ah.”
