I voted “no”, but I think I have had one under a different name (e.g. someone offered me a cookie, not a stroopwafel). Maybe I should have looked it up first.
Stroopwafels are awesome. I would say my favorite is definitely the chocolate-covered stroopwafel, but the speculaas version is also pretty nice.
But if you do make it over here - try a warm stroopwafel from a street vendor as already mentioned in the thread. Microwaving it for a few seconds just doesn’t compare!
Your poll options are incomplete - my answer is, “no, I’ve not eaten one, but I’m familiar with what they are.” They are quite common here in Indonesia, thanks to the Dutch influence.
Most commercial cookie confections don’t interest me, but this thread has made me want to try stroopwafels. Next time I see one, which is bound to happen soon, I’ll give it a try.
I live in the Netherlands, so: !
In highschool, we passed a guy making them fresh every day. He sold bags of Stroopwafel-cuttings for a few dimes.
Good times.
I’ve had them from my local supermarket. Quite nice, but nothing to write home about. Possibly freshly made by an expert baker would be a different story.
Yep. I get mine from Trader Joe’s. They make small ones, about the size of a poker chip.
Sweet but not overly so. Great compliment to a strong cup of coffee.
I have, and I owe it all to the Straight Dope. Stroopwaffels were a constant subject of conversation back in the days when Coldfire stalked the boards, and when I finally ran across one in a coffee shop somewhere (I cannot unfortunately remember where or when) I immediately bought one to try.
It is a damned good thing I don’t have unlimited access to them. I’d be 300+ pounds easy.
Shadez, you are an expat in The Hague?! Small world!! Me too!! I work for the European Patent Office.
No, but I’d love to try one.
Stroopwafels are yum, spekulaas are the bomb. But my heart belongs to poffertjies…
Why yes, just two weeks ago. Guess there’s a reason to go to the Scandinavian grocery after all…cuz caviar-in-a-tube sure isn’t it.
Gjetost is good, too.
Yes but just on early morning United flights and then just with ginger ale. Sometime I’d like to follow their recommendation and first place it like a lid over a warm cup of coffee.
Alright, next flight it’s going in my pocket.
There are good stroopwafels and meh stroopwafels. A good one is very very good.
At a recent gathering I was standing near the food with a friend and I exclaimed “Ooooo! Stroopwafels!” She had never had one, never heard of one and wondered how I knew what they were. I didn’t have an answer. I feel like there has never been a time I didn’t know stroopwafels. She briefly thought I might be making the name up.
I’ve seen them around but they haven’t looked like something I’d like to try. Perhaps a fresh one would seem more appealing than ones in a box wrapped in cellophane.
As often as I can find small packages of them, because every package is a serving size to me.
I said no, but then I looked it up. I think I’ve had them as the base of ice cream sandwiches once or twice.
I love speculaas, or however you spell it, but only if they are made with real butter. Biscoff brand, which I can readily get, is no longer made with butter. Not so good.
Yes, on a United flight. Not the whole warm-it-on-your-teacup experience, though. Yet.
