Normally when someone asks a question seeking advice or a factual answer here on the Dope, numerous people will respond. Have you ever acted upon that advice or answer and later found out that it was horrible advice or a completely wrong answer to your question?
Please share your experiences of how your resulting action based upon that bad advice unfolded and you realized you have been duped on the dope.
Not so much advice, but I once made a recipe someone had posted in Cafe Society. Came out bland, boring, and dry. I think we just tossed it and ordered pizza that night.
I passed up staying at the Ahwahnee in the heart of Yosemite, going instead to the Wawona, miles away and in comparison devoid of views. I know the person meant well but that was a major disappointment.
I think every “My job sucks” thread that is met with “Then you should absolutely quit!” would qualify for this.
Same goes for “My boy/girlfriend did this annoying thing” threads that are met with “dump his/her ass”.
The Internet is all about extremes and the Straightdope is definitely not immune from people who are highly opinionated, unqualified, or just plain nuts.
Omar Little - o.k, admittedly, no I haven’t. I have posted job complaints before which were met with the “then quit already” response, but I have never done so without having something else lined up. I’m always amazed at the number of people who think it is that simple and that bills somehow magically get paid or that another job is waiting for you.
Thankfully I’ve never had to get in a situation involving my wife as yet to get the inevitable “dump her ass” response.
