I guess “famous historian” depends on where you are and what they were a historian of, but I did meet on many occasions, Jim Coleman. He was a friend of my father’s.
Mr. Coleman (as I always called him) was a sports columnist and historian. He wrote daily columns for newspapers, many times on horse racing, but also on other sports. He wrote a few books on the history of horse racing, and one on hockey. His newspaper columns have been collected and published in books, including Daily Racing Form publications. In short, Mr. Coleman knew the history of horse racing.
Have you ever bought a copy of the Daily Racing Form?
Yes. Many times. My Daddy lived in HotSprings, Ar, home of Oaklawn Racing. I went to the track with him every week during season. Bought many forms. Lost lots of cash. It was fun though. Haven’t been back since he died.
HYE gotten an autograph from someone famous?
Yes, while waiting for a flight in LAX I had a brief but entertaining conversation with ‘The Master of Malaprop’ comedian, Norm Crosby. I asked for his autograph and the only thing I had readily available at hand for him to sign was the paperback copy of Alvin Toffler’s book ‘Future Shock’ I’d been carrying. He drew an X and a line on the inside cover and below it wrote “This line reserved for Alvin Toffler’s autograph. Norm Crosby”
No, but good grief, I’m still astonished that I managed to stay with Blockbuster from December of 2000 until April of 2013 (when I got laid off) without being fired for insubordination or being a smartass.
Have you ever hung out with work friends outside of work? (Be it in an official team-building capacity, or just for fun?)
I spent the night in the Juneau airport once on a flight that wasn’t even supposed to go to Juneau. Sitka was fogged in and we diverted to Juneau for the night (after a side trip to Anchorage for more fuel–quite a day). Got to Sitka the next day.
No, fortunately, but I’ve had guns drawn near me while I was on police ride-alongs, and was once in a courtroom full of armed deputies (the judge thought the defendant’s family was going to raise a ruckus, but they behaved themselves).
Yes, several times, including Charley’s Aunt, The Insanity of Mary Girard, The Skin of Our Teeth and Death of A Salesman in high school, and The Seagull in college.
