Have You Ever...?

In-play:

HYE won more than a few dollars in a lottery or raffle?

Yes. While working at Blockbuster, we had a contest for who could sell the most Rewards cards on a certain day or weekend. The winner would get his first pick of several lottery tickets. I won the contest, picked a card, and won $100 from it. It bought Christmas presents.

Have you ever been asked to leave someone’s house, or a public place?

Yes, back in college, I used to frequent a burger joint that was a popular student hangout. One night, after I ate, I was playing with what was on the table and started a small contained fire. I was told to leave and never come back.

HYE had a pet that gave birth in an unusual place?

Yes, our cat had her 2nd litter on my brother’s bed.

HYE been on a trip and found that you lost or forgot something important like your ticket, ID or passport?

I once went on a five day fishing trip without my fishing and driver’s licenses on me. Didn’t notice until I got there and changed clothes after a four hour drive. Fortunately I never saw a game warden.

HYE gotten into trouble(ticketed/warned/fined/thrown off a jobsite) for not having the proper documentation, permit or license for what you were doing?

Oh, yes. I did construction for 26 years, and it happened several times, usually for a very trivia matter.

HYE been in a tornado?

Not a tornado, but something similar known as a microburst. I was driving to a golf game at a course outside of town, and it was pretty obvious our game would be cancelled, as it was raining (it wasn’t when I left home) and the sky was quite dark and threatening. But if I could get to the course, I could meet my playing partners, and we could at least have a drink in the bar.

Nope. With a few miles to go, the wind picked up, the rain went sideways, and it became impossible to see. I pulled over to wait it out. My truck weighs three tons, and at one point, I thought it would be blown over. When the storm passed, I continued to the golf course, to meet my playing partners. The course was unplayable, with downed trees and branches. We had all been caught in the microburst, and needed a drink after that.

Have you ever driven in a blizzard?

Yes, or at least it was a very heavy snowfall. A truck carrying a house zoomed by me.

Have you ever experienced an earthquake?

Yes, several times, a couple of moderate ones in Mexico and Japan and a huge one, magnitude 7.7 in the Philippines. I was 80 miles from the epicenter, but it was still really scary.

Have you ever been in a fire?

Never been in one, per se, but have certainly been around enough brush burnings to know how dangerous fire can be,

Have you ever driven wayyyy too much over the speed limit?

Yes, I had just gotten a new car (1976 VW Rabbit), and just to test it, drove over 100 on the Long Island Expressway. It was exhilarating and scary at the same time.

HYE broken a bone, falling while ice skating?

Yes. In my younger days, I was a figure skater. Some years after I stopped skating, my girlfriend want to go skating on a date. So we did. I found out the hard way that if you don’t practice figure skating often, you won’t be able to do it years later. I ended up falling, breaking an elbow in the process.

Have you ever broken a bone while participating in any sport?

This is coming dangerously close to falling off the first page, so I’ll answer:

No, but I did experience some moderate knee pain while playing basketball, and it was diagnosed as Osgood-Schlatter Disease. The doctor was funny, though annoying at the time: “If it hurts to jump, don’t jump; if you jump anyway and it hurts, don’t come bitching to me.”

Eh, I was a terrible basketball player anyway, particularly by Indiana standards.

Have you ever gone to a movie theater and not seen the movie you were intending to? (Either deliberately or due to happenstance?)

Yes-Night before getting shipped to San Antonio for basic training I went out to see Mahogany and somehow ended up in the theater showing Jaws.

Have you ever caught a foul ball or homer at a major league game?

Not in play: Very appropriate in a way, since the repeated line in “Theme From Mahogany” is “Do You Know Where You’re Going To?”

Carry on.

No, I have not ever caught a foul ball or homer at a major league game, although I’ve had some fall very near me.

HYE been hit by a ball as a spectator at a baseball game?

Yes, I wasn’t paying attention, when a ball came and hit me right in the eye socket. I think I was about 8 or 9 at the time.

HYE been the best student in any class?

Yes. I had done calligraphy for a number of years, and when I took night courses in graphic design at a community college, one of the courses was “Lettering.” It was pretty much Calligraphy 101. The other students had never done proper calligraphy before (broad-edged nib, dip pot of ink, etc.), so they were starting from scratch. I was quite experienced, and ended up getting the best mark in the class.

Have you ever done any kind of artwork for pay?

No, I haven’t, but my wife made Mario cross stitch several years ago and it has been purchased

Have you ever seen a famous star?

Many, many. I had known Ayn Rand and Keith Hering, and had met Alan Greenspan, Mickey Spillane, Barbra Streisand, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and many others.

Have you ever eaten frog legs?

Yes, my grandmother used to fry them up whenever I(or one of my cousins) would gig enough frogs to make it worth her while. I also had them decades later cooked in a fancy frenchified way at a restaurant. Never could stand the taste, but I love just about anything else that swims.

HYE eaten something often/regularly that you don’t care for, but said nothing out of politeness?
