I was making the rounds with my chilluns as the missus wo-manned the fort. One group that caught my eye was a group of about 4 teenage girls dressed as catholic school girls. Short short plaid skirts, white knee socks on their oh-so-long legs, braids … Coincidentally, I urged my littluns to follow them for a bit. "But dad, we already were down that block!" “Shut up, kid and follow those legs - er, I mean kids.”
BTW, in our neighborhood, just about every parent accompanying their kids has a beer or a drink in their hand. Some pull wagons with coolers in them. Kinda wierd that the generally stuck up and antisocial community collectively lets their hair down on this one day. I didn’t get any candy, but I scored 2 Pete’s Wicked Ales and a Gila Monster Lager.
Oh yeah - my kids rang one bell and when the door opened my buddy commented that whatever was cooking that smelled great. We left with cups of homemade chili. Mmmm.
One of our neighbors, sans kids, walked around with one of those coolers on wheels passing out beer to the folks passing out candy! It was the best Halloween ever for me as I had never before received beer as a treat (and I didn’t have to leave my porch to get it)!
Some of those costumes sound great. I love the chain-gang idea, and the way the parents got into the act. I’m also happy to hear so many boys are willing to dress as girls, but maybe I shouldn’t be.
One kid I got made me laugh. He was about 12, and he was wearing a hockey mask, a white afro wig, bunny ears, and Fred Flintstone’s suit. He probably had more to him that I missed, too, since I was absorbed with getting slippery pieces of candy and toys into people’s bags.
I didn’t get any surly teenagers–we got a few teenagers but they were properly behaved and had made some nod towards wearing a costume.
Several didn’t say “trick or treat.” I wonder what’s up with that.
The cutest costume I saw was a really little kid - 3 or 4 - in this darling fuzzy bee outfit. It was like footie pajamas, but really thick & fuzzy, and had a hood that came up with a couple antenna on top. Black and yellow, typical bee colors. Made me wish I had a kid.
Mr. Athena saw another kid with the same costume later. Verry cute!
Most were pretty standard, but there were a couple of older kids - maybe 13 or 14. One was wearing all black and a cloak, and carrying a (bright green) squirt gun. He said he was a “highly trained professional assassin”. He was friendly enough that it worked. His companion, wearing a black trenchcoat and a backwards backpack, said he was the stunt double for Neo in The Matrix, and then said, “I can do the bullet-dodge, too.” He sure could…it was hilarious.
