This partially answers a question I’d thought of earlier. As I’ve never had a package stolen, I wasn’t sure what one should do if it happened. At least in lingyi’s case, they sent a replacement, but do you normally just let the retailer know, and they send a replacement? Does it vary by retailer? By cost of the item? Type of shipping?
Thankfully, I haven’t. My current apartment building has a concierge who signs for all packages and then we pick them up at our convenience. My precious building just had a storage room for packages so any tenant could grab someone else’s package, but never happened to me. At least it was protected from thieves outside the building.
I never have, but I get as much as possible delivered to work. When it can’t be delivered to work, I keep an eye on the tracking page ans when I see it’s been delivered I’ll run home and grab it (I work about 5 minutes away from my house).
My parents live in good (you might even call it upscale) neighborhood and have had packages stolen off their front porch twice. They also had all their porch furniture (two chairs and a table) stolen.
Living in a bad part of town, I assume, makes it worse, but living in a good part of town certainly doesn’t exempt you.
When someone jokes that they don’t lock their doors because they live in such a nice part of town, I’ll come back with ‘if I was a robber, this the area I’d come to, just for that reason’.
Regarding the monitor that came in the brightly colored box (FairyChatMom?), whenever I’m given the option, I’ll always tell Amazon that it’s a gift or check the box telling them to put things in an Amazon box instead of shopping it unboxed.
No. Anything that goes missing from my place is either high wind or a rabid coyote. I could leave money on my ‘porch’ and it would never disappear.
Except gloves;)
Everywhere I’ve lived has had a secure aspect to them, like an alcove out of line-of-sight from the street, or a security gate that needs to be answered or unlocked, so no, I have never had anything stolen. I’ve also directed some packages to my work address occasionally, carrying it home from there, just for convenience’s sake really, but it also was a handy lump of added security.
No. We ship all packages to a business address where they’re locked inside until we fetch them. FWIW: We also have all financial/personal correspondence routed to a PO box that we empty once a week. Porch pirates are a constant occurrence in our area, and there have been 2 incidences of mass mail theft (entire streets at once). But none of this affects us.
In Chicago, most apts I rented had people to accept packages. The one that didn’t, packages were left in a locked mailroom that only tenants and staff had the key to - package s were stolen by fellow tenants all the time. I never got a package left for me there, so the post office and UPS stopped leaving them - you had to come to their offices to get them if you weren’t home.
Here in KY when a package goes missing it’s because a neighbor saw it and snagged it for you; they bring it over when they see you’re home. Crazy, but even here there are people that cruise residential streets looking for unattended packages on porches.
Nope.
I get all my stuff delivered to work. That way I can open and inspect what is in the box, discard packaging in my dumpster, then bring my stuff home with me. It also eliminates the problem of having the UPS guy find our secluded home, and then doing a tight 3-point turn at the end of our lane.
Package theft has been particularly bad in my neighborhood, lately. There are fb and nextdoor posts of boxes stolen daily.
Luckily, the delivery drivers are starting to leave packages in my breezeway rather than on the completely open front stoop.
About two years ago, the IT guy in my company shipped me a laptop. Sadly, he didn’t tell me when he shipped it or give me a tracking number- or even insure the damned thing. The package was dropped at my door around 8pm, and around 1am that night it was stolen. My front door cameras caught a picture of the thief, which I gave to the police… but nothing’s ever come of it.
Haven’t had anything stolen but did get a delivery notification that said “handed to resident”. Since both me and the wife were at work we wondered if the driver handed it to a thief. Nope, it was on the front porch when I got home. I figure the driver was covering his ass if it got stolen.
For the first time ever, just a few weeks ago. I was out of town the day it was delivered. The next day, when I made it back to town, I saw that the tracking showed it had been delivered. I actually found the plastic wrapper with my address and tracking info, so apparently they took the time to at least partially unwrap it before getting away. Kinda odd, but there it was.
I have only had one package stolen, it was a couple items from REI. The thief tried to return the items to one of their stores and asked for a cash refund. The refund was denied because credit card refunds are only done as a credit. The thief left the store with no money and no merchandise, the clerk knew the stuff was from a stolen package. An REI employee delivered the stuff to my house in person and showed me a picture of the thief, he thought I might know the person. I didn’t but in my mind, REI went out of there way with their customer service.
Nothing stolen yet but most of my packages go into my large mailbox or if they are too big for that are handed to me personally by the postman.
Ahh, but you forget! I’ve got them back!
^^^for now.
Package theft is a huge problem in my neighborhood. Especially in large apartment buildings. It happens in my building even though the packages are left in an interior package room. According to our police department, these are organized operations.
The thieves follow the trucks and gain access to the building, usually by walking in behind an invited guest or resident. Which is easy to do, it’s a large building and frequently multiple people will be using the buzzer system at the same time. So it’s hard to tell who was legitimately buzzed in and who wasn’t.
Then they grab a few packages and leave. We have all sorts of security cameras which have enabled us to get photos of the thieves but it doesn’t help much. Every now and then the police will bust one of these operations and we get a respite of a few months before it starts up again.
I have always had packages replaced when I call the shipper and say I never received them. One of my neighbors said the shipper refused to replace the package unless he sent in a police report. My response was “You are an idiot. Did you actually tell the shipper that the package arrived and was stolen? Just say you didn’t get it, dumbass”.
Nope. I order a LOT of stuff, and if it makes it to the porch, it stays there. I’ve had a half dozen packages sit on my porch for over a week, and nobody ever messed with them. There’s a high school right up the street and kids walking past the house all the time. I live in what others in the area think of as a “bad” neighborhood, but I’ve been here 5 years and I’ve yet to see anything shady at all. Thievery just isn’t a thing here.
When I don’t get a package I was expecting, 100% of the time it’s because the shipper didn’t bother to deliver it.
I know a lot of people who balk at their prices, and I agree a lot of the stuff they sell can be bought elsewhere cheaper, but it’s stuff like this that keeps me going back to REI.
