Looking up old folk stories strikes me as a lovely way to waste time.
I first read this story in college. I majored in Elementary Education and found it in a book in the college library’s children’s room. It’s considered a good story to read aloud when teaching synonyms. I have a couple of versions now.

Well, the Forum description says, “This is the place for polling.” I didn’t even know polling was possible anywhere else! But as long as we’ve come this far, please, can we just leave it in place here? Besides, it’ll pass into entropic infinity soon enough. I’m just glad to have been able to introduce a few people to one of my favorite bits of English-language (?) whimsy!
(I wish my memory was good enough to allow me to memorize the puppy!)
