Have you met your favorite artist/band?

I worked with the wife of John Hernandez (drummer for Oingo Boingo) and got to hang out a few times back stage. These were not wild party animals. Very nice though, and the first time I met him, Danny Elfman autographed the leg of my jeans. Also, the Hernandezes gave me their old television set.

Yes. I’ve met Robbie Fulks a few times.

I even offended him once when objectively discussing his music. He has since either forgotten about it or forgiven me. I’m sure it’s the former.

eta: I’ve hung-out on a few tour buses, but you asked for favorite.

Met Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman on Friday night*. Certainly one of my favourites/idols, even if they are getting on a bit. It was brilliant. Really nice chat with them.

If I met Jack White or Robert Plant I think I would lose the power of speech.

*Trevor Rabin was there too…

I’ve met Todd Rundgren and been able to have a few worthwhile discussions with him. And in addition to meeting Kate Bush in New York, she called me on the phone to talk about a video I had made for one of her songs.

I met the late, great Michael Hedges when he performed at Rockefeller’s in Houston some years back. Spent a very enjoyable 20 minutes talking about music in general and guitars in particular.

I have met Al Stewart more than once. His lead guitarist, Dave Nachmanoff, played a house concert in my home a couple of years ago.

I met Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. When he was seven years old.

No, but I don’t get out much.

Once, I asked a guy for directions in the ROI on a deserted dirt road above a beach… northwest of Clifden. He was walking along the road, dressed like The Edge, and I was in a rental car.
At the time, a lot of people were copying his look though and… lets be honest: that shit never happens.
I asked if the road (about 10 feet wide) went down to the house a mile distant or if it veered left and off of the cliff. To be fair, whoever it was did laugh (and HERTZ will never know for sure).

That D-chord must have hurt:smiley:

The late great indeed. What a talent. I had the privilege of seeing him twice, once in a small theater at Stanford.

I talked with the members of Nevermore, Warrel Dane is an interesting dude.

I met Art Garfunkel–but not Paul Simon–when they were doing their reunion tour in 1983.

I saw George Michael in person at a CD signing back in 2004. The now deceased George Michael.

Of my handful of favorites, the band I’ve had the most success meeting members of is Superchunk. I’ve been able to chat with Jon Wurster, the drummer, on a number of occasions, and when Wurster was backing up another fave of mine, Bob Mould, in North Carolina, I ran into singer Mac McCaughan and giddily did the fanboy thing. I haven’t had much luck with Mould or anyone in R.E.M. or The Replacements. Billy Bragg I have spoken to a couple of times. He’s the kind of guy who happily does the meet-and-greet line after the show and strives to give EVERY person his full attention.

No. Because I live in the arse end of nowhere. At least I did better in the authors arena.

I met Billy Idol a couple of years ago before one of his shows. He is a pretty cool guy and we had a nice, but short conversation.

I got to meet Tori Amos briefly before a concert in Normal, Illinois in '97 or '98. She was lovely, hungover, and very tiny. I think I managed to speak a coherent word or two.

My wife got to meet Glen Phillips (and the rest of Toad the Wet Sprocket) numerous times. I can’t even count how many times she’s seen them in concert.

Phish is one of my favorite bands, which pre-dates my move to Vermont 10 years ago. I have chatted with Paige a couple of times, as our daughters were in some summer camps together, although that was many years ago. More recently i have had the chance to talk with Mike a few times, as we are members of the same congregation. we had a long talk about guitars and basses and such once, he was excited to tell me about an experimental guitar he was working on with a guy in his ‘other’ (not Phish) band. Nice guy, quiet but friendly. Also got to meet the band backstage about 25 years ago in New Orleans, but that wasn’t much.

Not a one. Other than asking directions ( ) I’d have to reason to even get close.

I did stand in line at the post office behind a couple I later saw on MTV, but 1) I didn’t know it at the time, and 2) I didn’t like their music anyway.

My sister and I chatted with piano player for Muddy Waters Pinetop Perkins for ten minutes outside the Stable Inn in Bangor, Maine 40 years ago, before the show.

The first date my wife and I went on was to see Mary Fahl (formerly of October Project) who opened for Susan Werner. Years, a marriage and a child later, we had the opportunity at different times to see both individually at other shows and talk to them after the show with a “You were our first date” story which both seemed to get a kick out of and were appreciative of being part of someone’s greater tale.

I’ve had the chance to give “Hey, love your music” remarks to Margo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) and Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley & solo) but nothing much more than that. My favorite artists tend not to be people who fill stadiums or arenas so no stories of meeting anyone mega-famous.

I have met, and cooked for a few of my favorite bands, most notably…“LeftoverSalmon” and “String Cheese Incident” … I met them, partied with them and still really miss Mark Vann!

I have also gotten to meet Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead on a very cursory level.

I would have pulled out an eye tooth to meet David Brubeck… my fave of his albums is Time Out.

enjoy… Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Blue Rondo à la Turk," live - YouTube
