Have you tried any headsets for watching TV?

I’m a little hearing impaired and my wife goes bananas when I have the volume high.

So, I checked Amazon for headsets and I’m just little bit edgy about buying, say, TV Ears. For one thing, there seem to be various versions of these things, but without a difference - visually, anyway, and the customer reviews sound like they’re written by an ad agency.

Do you have a headset recommendation? TV Ears or otherwise?

The Sony wireless headphones worked OK for me. Fidelity wasn’t bad…

Sennheiser makes them too.

I wish I could remember the kind I gave my dad–he has the same problem, and he loves the ones we gave him. I’ll ask my wife when I get home and see if she remembers.

Thanks! Looking forward to it.

I’ve tried several wireless headphones, with varying success. Each seems to have issues. Most issues are around tuning in the signal, or the signal drifting away. The headphone weight of the wireless kind may also bother some people. And then there’s recharging the headphones or replacing the batteries (depending on the design).

I’ve settled on the low-tech solution: a decent set of stereo headphones and 25’ headphone extension cord. This set up is much more reliable and gives good sound quality. There are no issues with the signal drifting away. When I want to use the headphones, I just plug them in to the home theater receiver. No muss, no fuss.

My dad got these Sony ones last Christmas and I just hooked them up for him last week.

The sound is really good and I personally like the “spring action” of the headset (although they may be a little heavy). The battery is rechargeable, which is cool. I had a hard time getting them to sit right on the base the first time out, but they seem to be easier to “land” into the base now that they’ve come out of the box for a while.

He doesn’t use them as much as he should, IMHO, so I can’t tell you how good the range is. We were using them at an 80 degree angle on Thanksgiving and they worked just fine.

I have the Sennheiser RS-120 wireless headphones, mostly for listening to podcasts while cooking or doing other chores around the house. It works pretty well.

I used to have a SONY wireless headphone - not the same one ZipperJJ has, but I had the same problem - it’s tricky to put it on the base just right. The Sennheiser is much better in this respect; the headphone sits on (hangs from) two metal rails, and the rails themselves are the electrical contacts for recharging.

I use wireless headphones all the time – have been for nearly a decade. Started because I was working strange shifts and my wife likes to watch TV, which just wasn’t good in a small apartment. They’re also useful for walking around the house – no more missing stuff because you want a snack!

I recommend you get a pair that runs on AA batteries, and pick up a set of rechargeables. All rechargeable batteries fail over time, and it’s a PITA if the batteries and charger are part and parcel of your system.

You will also want to examine the audio outputs of your TV. Yes, you may be able to plug into the headphone jack – but then nobody else gets to listen to the tube. (You’ll also need to crank the sound way up on your TV to get decent signal strength.) You should have a couple of RCA audio outs somewhere on your TV, so plug into that – and get a Y-adapter if you need it.

Years ago, my batshit insane (then-)wife would insist on watching TV at 3am with Disaster Area levels of volume. Much much higher than it would be during reasonable hours. Obviously, this made it rather difficult for me to sleep.

So I bought her a good pair of stereo headphones with a 20’ extension cord.

When we separated, I took them, because I was moving into an apartment. Worked great, because a year later I got a job working 3rd shift and could be up at that same 3am without disturbing my neighbors.

Now I take them along when I go out of town. There’s nothing like being able to kick back in a hotel room and watch a movie without worrying about the people in the next room complaining, or having to try to listen to the TV over their noise.

No way I’d do that with a wireless system. I’d be afraid of accidentally leaving it in a hotel room somewhere.

My dad just gets fairly cheap (perhaps about $60) rechargable wireless headphones at Radio Shack. Having the best quality doesn’t matter to him, as his hearing loss ruins his range of hearing anyway. They work great and last through a year or two of daily use. Well worth it in my opinion for the price.

My wife got me a pair of Sony Wireless over the ear headphones. I’m more or less happy with them. She gets up before I do in the morning, so she goes to sleep before I do. Besides being able to listen with all the other sound off, it lets me get past my slight hearing loss. When I’m watching a show like Heroes, where everything crucial to the plot is murmured or whispered, I can put on the headphones and hear what they said. I can also go down the hall to take a leak without missing a critical plot turn.

We have the Sony wireless. AAA Sony batteries that we have worn out and so use regular rechargeable AAA’s.

I hate the shows that have the music high and the voices low. What are they thinking?

I have had a pair of Sennheiser’s for years, and gave a pair to my Dad as a present. We both love them. It’s nice to be able to listen to TV while I’m doing chores, or bother anyone else if they’re busy or asleep.

Nexxtech is the brand that my husband uses. We’re in Canada, and he says they’re available at Future Shop or Canadian tire. They work well for him watching TV and me listening to the radio, silence, or music when I’m surfing the Dope… I mean, writing.
