HBO's Here and Now

Anyone else watching this? I started it a few weeks ago and thought it was a mild family drama but it started getting really weird and slightly sci-fi or fantasy. I don’t know what it is. It’s weird though and I kind of like it. Holly Hunter is another actress with a voice I can barely tolerate but other than that it was totally binge-worthy. I hope it’s not canceled because I’d love to see where they’re taking it next season.

I watched it. (Note the past tense; the original ten-episode run ended last week.) I haven’t heard for sure whether it will get another season, but the reviews were middling to poor and the show didn’t get much buzz, so I’d be very surprised if it’s renewed. My opinion is that it was just OK.

Like John from Cincinnati and The Leftovers (both previous HBO drama series), it was mostly a conventional drama with an additional supernatural element. (As opposed to True Blood, where the supernatural was front and center to the story.)

Oh heck yeah it has terrible reviews. I’m glad I watched it before I read them. I enjoyed it myself. I went in thinking it would be a good show to fall asleep to but the Ramon/therapist story kept me interested.

The only thing that irked me (other than Holly Hunter’s voice) was the teen daughter who was cast by a woman in her mid-twenties who could pass for late twenties. It wasn’t so weird until she was making out with the boy who looked 15.

The Hollywood Reporter says the show was cancelled. No surprise there.

I would have like to see some resolution to the storylines, but the would-be supernatural stuff was irritating.

Well shoot. Now I’ll never know what the whole 11 11 thing meant.

Just found out The Path was canceled too. There’s another show nobody liked but me. I honestly didn’t like it either though. It was like watching a slow moving train wreck.

Did you watch the last episode? One possible explanation was clear.

I watched it. I just don’t know now what I must have missed. I’ll have to watch it again.

All I know is the therapist’s mother clawed at her face. I am most confused about the fire man creature leading Ramon to the volcano and what could possibly happen next.

I’ll use a spoiler box in the very unlikely case that anyone cares.

The volcano blew at 11:11, so that’s one connection to 11 11. What the connection was between the therapist’s mother and Ramon was never made clear.

Basically the show was a confusing mess.

I watched it because it was set in Portland. I couldn’t believe how lazy it was.

I have never seen Portland used in such a half-assed way. A location scout spent a weekend in Portland, and the show runners have clearly never been here. A list:
[ul]
[li]Look - we have Bunk Sandwiches, Pok Pok and Voodoo Doughnut food containers! My apartment has a wall decoration that’s a bunch of Portland street names![/li][li]Did you forget this is Portland? Here’s the Old Town sign again![/li][li]Mt. Hood is blowing up, isn’t that crazy!! Watch Ramon walk there, even though that would take him several days[/li][li]It’s simply comical that a high school around here would have such racial tension. (Hanging in effigy? Really?)[/li][li]No one would give two shits about a cross-dressing student, so much so that they would beat him up while yelling “TRANNY!”[/li][li]I’ve never seen anyone protesting outside a Planned Parenthood in the 12 years I’ve been here.[/li][li]No homeless person is going to mug someone in broad daylight under the Broadway bridge and steal their bike.[/li][li]I loved the ridiculous offices of that rich guy, (some sort of wooden honeycomb - where is that?), and I especially loved that the sister works for some sort of e-commerce / fashion blog whatever tech company, who gets an offer of FIVE MILLION DOLLARS to work for another similar tech-type company in Portland! And that on her first day another employee is so tone-deaf as to say right when she sits down that she was a minority hire? Lazy.[/li][/ul]
I also loved how three people who graduated from Cal continually refer to it as “Berkeley” - nobody I’ve ever known who went there calls it anything other than “Cal.” And that the teenager is catfishing people on Facebook - pretty sure teenagers don’t use Facebook anymore. More laziness.
