HDMI to VGA converter

As usual I have bought something and I am not able to operate it!!!

The converter I bought is Model No. HDMI2VGA01 witch includes R/L audio converter.
It came with only the 5 volt power adapter and no cables.
It just has a HDMI socket on one side and a VGA socket on the other.
I bought a SONY Slim HDMI High Speed 1 meter Multi Media interface cable.
I am plugged into my Epson VGA projector and a HP laptop with only the HDMI socket.

The instructions are quite simple, the only thing I can see that would go against the directions is the power adapter is to be plugged in after all connections are made.
Anyone with ideas on what I could be doing wrong ??? Please :frowning:

After you’ve connected it to your laptop, you’ll probably need to add another display to its settings.

You can likely access this by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting Display Settings. You’ll see a second box with a 2 in it (if not, try the detect button). Select this box and then choose either “Extend desktop to this display” or “Duplicate 1 on 2” from the dropdown menu below.

The precise details will vary depending on your version of Windows. What HP laptop do you have? Most of the HP laptops I’ve seen use DisplayPort rather than HDMI, which is going to be trouble.

Please provide projector make & model and Windows version (7/8 or 10)

Make sure to have every cable plugged in - incl. the power supply for the converter.

You need to change the display settings to either duplicate or extend the display, this varies depending on which version of Windows you are using.

You may have to manually change the screen resolution, due to the fact that your projector may not get detected properly though the converter and only has specific resolutions that it supports, see link.

Please provide projector make & model and Windows version (7/8 or 10).

The enterprise models of HP use the display port, the consumer versions have HDMI.
I have a ProBook 6470b for work with a Display Port and HP 15-g205 at home with HDMI.

Thanks for the replies, i am gone 16+ hours a day with a job only the insane would do but i Love it! Its a Bus driving job and we serve the Disabled and Disadvantaged in a rural Transportation Co.

My (Wifes) HP laptop has windows 10 and the Projector is an older Epson LCD Model EMP-TW10H
Its only used 6 hours a month so to retire it is out of the question.

Last month i was able to test this HP laptop on a projector with the HDMI port and it worked and of course I didn’t know what i was doing but it worked anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:
I have used this projector for a few years with my Sony VIO laptop but its not working and 2 techs have looked it over and said its beyond them why it will not start most times. What the last one told me is the only way he could get it to start is to remove the battery and hold the power button until the on light is out then reinstall the battery and it will start.
Of course i had a much more Red Neck method the last 2 times i had trouble starting it and that was to flop it over and over and over and each time try and got it going but have to try something different. That is why i am using this computer that has no VGA port.
Sorry for the long run but all i want out of a computer is for it to work. :o

What I don’t understand is why the OP needs a powered HDMI-to-VGA adapter. We have unpowered ones at work and they generally work OK.

Sir, Doughbag;

I had resolution issues with my 1st projector that i used with my old 486 laptop when i got my new Twinhead Pentium laptop and i fried that laptop not once but 2 times with that old projector. Twinhead repaired it both times and i bought this Epson then.

The repair shop i had my VIO in for repair had that one on the shelf and it has RCA jacks and my projector also has sound so what the heck???
I certainly would have bought anything at the time.
I need this system up and running Sunday for a Class.

Me too - with the qualifier that they generally don’t last forever - maybe 2 years of office-day use and they start to fail - but the same is true of many small peripherals such as USB hubs and desktop switches.

Thats for where the HDMI output also includes the ability to put analog VGA out on the HDMI socket’s pins. and your unpowered adaptor just reshapes the socket.

They need it sometimes to power the converter unit, esp. when its included in the box.

Windows 10 might get a bit confused running a 800x480 resolution over the HDMI port or may not be able to run that resolution at all.

Go to: Start (that windows symbol)
Click onto: Settings
select: System
Select: Display
in “Multiple displays” select “Extend these displays”
Then click onto : “Advanced display settings”
Click onto “Identify” under the squares named 1 and 2
Remember the number that shows up on your laptop screen and click onto the square that didn’t show on your laptop screen.
In the “Resolution” chart select the resolution your projector supports and confirm by clicking “Apply”.
Start at the bottom of the list and work yourself up.

Well that’s what its looking like :frowning:
When I get to the “Resolution” box the numbers 1280X720 are in dim and I am unable to open the resolution settings.
I am just out of luck here it appears

Thank You, All, so much for everything!
