Stupid Cutler…
Also - for those who’ve posted negative points on defense (and don’t have a second option), are you including a check against just starting no one that day?

No, that hadn’t even occurred to me. I’ll add that.
ETA: A quick check reveals that you did get assigned -4 for defense in week 2 since that was your highest scoring defense. I’ll add checks in by next week, having it recalculate all potential scores for the season to correct the season averages.
That would be a very odd thing to add as it is absolutely not a viable strategy to bench a defense and not start another. In hindsight, sure, it seems obvious, but nobody would ever, ever do that. You’re kinda penalizing people for something way too far out in right field to ever be considered a standard, viable strategy. Now, if you want to include their best available option on the FA list, okay, but that opens up an entirely new set of problems.
I was thinking on Sunday that if Kolb had a monster game, and somebody owned both Vick and Kolb, the optimal rating would be unfair to them on basically the same grounds as you point out. I had to go back and re-analyze my motivation for these rankings in the first place.
As for the free agent pool, that’s technically feasible for not much extra ongoing work, but it would be contrary to the stated purpose of these rankings. In a nutshell, all I’m looking to get out of them is the measure of how well we assembled talent. There are loads of ways fantasy players can screw themselves, from not having the handcuff when their starter goes down to just not picking the breakout bench star while your starters choke, or even rocking the house in every way except to happen to be facing the one team that scores higher than you that week.
Head to head is really fun, and I would never want to do a total points league. But even a total points league wouldn’t eliminate the problem of the random bench players scoring better than your starters, so a total points league isn’t a truly fair measure either. Given that, head to head is miles better.
These rankings are just a side method for us to measure how well we assembled talent regardless of who our H2H matchup was that week or who we left on the bench. As such, the BPsA in the free agent pool are irrelevant for that task.
The coaching grade is mostly a tacked-oon afterthought. In the above hypothetical about Vick/Kolb, it’s not a matter of getting your coaching grade unfairly tanked but rather a measure of how smart you were to have Kolb on your roster. (If he’d had a monster game when Vick went down.)
ETA: Forgot to say that I’m leaning toward Jules’ argument, which would be to leave it as it currently is, which requires a starter at every position provided you actually have one on the roster. Note that if Munch had a second DEF and they had a Bye, then a 0 would have been the highest score and that’s what he’d have gotten. Same weirdness, but my first impression is that that would be a bit of a PITA to check for and it would gain us very little.
What? People start no DEF for strategic purposes ALL the time - usually when your DEF is on Sunday night or Monday night and it’s the last player to go, and you have a small lead that could be lost with a blowout. It’s not terribly common, but it happens regularly enough to call it a viable strategy (and under those circumstances, SHOULD happen more often). People do it with QBs sometimes as well, but it’s not as common for them to put up negative points (stupid Cutler…).
That’s a fair point.
It’s pretty simple to put a lower limit of 0 on each starting position, and I can see the logic of Munch’s position.
Nobody ever goes into Sunday morning and benches their defense and leaves the spot empty. Ever. What you’re talking about, however, happens, but isn’t just specific to the Def or QB spots, it happens with every spot. But it’s still not remotely as often as you seem to think, because points scored is the first tie breaker and most people aren’t willing to sacrifice that on the rare chance their player ends up with negative points (and I’d add that your scenario is probably the only one that ever happens, I can’t think of another reason to ever do that). Scoring negative points itself is a pretty rare occurrence, too.

Not for me and my defenses this year…
Need to hold off a charge from Munch; he needs about 4 points, and has 5 players, each with less than 2 minutes to go…
ETA: Never mind, Louis Murphy has the whole 4th quarter left, but so does my Zack Miller, so the game won’t be decided just yet.
Effing Chris Johnson. I was totally going to get a win this week until those two garbage TDs.
! I may get one after all. God bless return yardage points, and Percy Harvin.
I’ll be helping me mother move over the weekend, and we’re likely packing up the computers today, so if I don’t get a chance to revisit my roster by Sunday, would it be possible for **Ellis **to put Aaron Rodgers into my starting lineup IF AND ONLY IF he’s unequivocally named the starter before game time? If so, thanks, and if not, well, that’s ok, Alex Smith is actually a decent play this week.
No problem. I see he has been cleared to play, btw. I’ll keep an eye on him and start him if he starts, or Smith if he doesn’t.

I thought I already posed something like this, but apparently not. I need a RB upgrade; my 3rd, 5th, and 7th round picks (Ricky Williams, Jerome Harrison, and Clinton Portis) are not working out so well … but despite having probably the worst RB corps in the league, I’m 4-2 and in 5th place, so it’s worth trying to improve.
I’d like to trade either Greg Jennings or Roddy White for a RB that I can start without embarrassing myself. Also available are potential keepers Demaryius Thomas (12th Round) and Mario Manningham (13th), and maybe TE Zach Miller (currently 3rd in TE scoring). Aaron Rodgers is also available to be included in a trade, but only as an upgrade, to someone who can send me back a decent QB.
We finally got the computer set up, but my time on it is still going to be limited for a while, so I’m hoping other people can come up with creative deals, as I don’t know how much time I’ll have for sending out offers of my own. Thanks.
Be sure to post here if you get a deal done and both parties want it fast-tracked for this week.
No! He’s 12 minutes late!

I think I lost Waiver claim position without making a waiver claim. Just a reminder that I have not made a waiver claim all season.

Dude, you’re killing me. heh. Okay, so check out what I did for the last 20 minutes…(funniest parts in blue)
Luckily there is no statute of limitations of priority errors. Remember back to week 1?
There were several contested picks this week, with two people (including me!) missing out on guys due to waiver priority. This list is ordered by who got awarded whom first:
Baltimore Weirdos (Weirddave) is awarded Michael Vick (QB-Phi)
Quentin’s JAMmers (Jules Andre) won the Brandon Jackson (RB-GB) lottery
9 Inch Neils (RNATB) is awarded Mark Clayton (WR-STL)
Baltimore Weirdos (Weirddave) is awarded Todd Heap (TE-Bal)
9 Inch Neils (RNATB) is awarded New England (DEF-NE)You are free to sign these guys yourselves. Free agency is now open.
Then it turned out that VarlosZ already owned Brandon Jackson. Looks like I failed to reset your waiver priority after that.
Note that your waiver priority will get “used up” if you sign a player off yahoo waivers. We don’t use yahoo waivers much in this league, but any time an owner releases a player, that player goes on yahoo waivers for 2 days. If you sign him during those two days, yahoo puts you in a queue and waits until the player clears waivers, then whomever wins that players goes to the end of the priority queue. I looked through the entire history of transactions and verified that you have never signed a player off yahoo waivers.
I checked where you started in priority, then went through all of my “waiver claim” posts to the yahoo board and crossed off everyone ahead of you who made a claim. Only two were left ahead of you, so you get priority 3.
Okay, so the punchline is that when I finally just now went in to change your priority to 3, it was already set at 3. 11 is your number of moves. Doh!
Don’t feel bad; I made the exact same mistake when I went in to check before I did anything.
