Just saw it and gave him Scott in the 12th.
Just finished a 12-team, 15-spot no-keeper draft in 1’17", so this should be over by 12 ET.
Took Favre in the 9th as my #1. It made me throw up in my mouth a little bit.

heh, not your best effort.
When we get the correct draft results posted, it’d be good to include the trade between Spiritus Mundi and Jules Andre.
Shit
.
Quick recap of my own draft (missed my first two picks because I thought we started at 10:30 ET):
-
(2) Maurice Jones-Drew - This was an autopick. I’m not a fan of Rice, so it was either Turner or MJD for me here anyway. I probably would have taken Turner, but MJD was a close second.
-
(18) Brandon Marshall - if I hadn’t made this pick, I would have thought long and hard about it. Marshall did fine with Cutler and Orton, so I’m not worried about how he’ll do with Henne. I am worried about how much Miami will throw in the red zone.
-
(30) Ronnie Brown - I have Brown ranked much higher than most. He was coming off an ACL tear last season, so 1000 yards was pretty good. It’s a lot better than Edgerrin James did coming off a similar injury at the same point in his career. I think Brown has 1500 yard potential this year, especially with Ricky Williams aging.
-
(46) Mike Sims-Walker - Okay, this is a problem. I already had Steve Smith and Percy Harvin coming, but Sims-Walker was the BPA in my book, so I took him. I prefer to have too many running backs if I’m going to be stacked at any position, not wideouts, but I can play the matchups with my top three guys. He’s available for trade.
-
(58) Eli Manning - Like Brown, I think he’s way undervalued. The fifth round is higher than his ADP, but I’ll take a guaranteed 25 scores over the guys who were available otherwise.
-
(83) Donald Brown - My first potential keeper. This might be the year Brown takes Addai’s job, in which case I’m sitting pretty. Even if he doesn’t, 40% of the Colts’ carries make Brown a borderline starter. As a #3/4, he’s superb.
-
(98) Steve Smith (K) - Carried my team during the first half of last year. Slowed down in the second half, which makes the Sims-Walker pick more appealing. Available for trade.
-
(99) Kellen Winslow - Best TE left on the board, and I needed one. 900 yards and 5 scores is about all you can ask from an 8th-rounder.
-
(124) Percy Harvin (K) - Jesus fuck I’ve got a lot of receivers. Harvin has to be the best #4 wideout on anyone’s roster, especially with Rice out 8+ games. Available for trade.
-
(129) Carnell Williams (K) - Guaranteed production is rarer than rocking horse shit at RB in round 10. Williams probably won’t carry the ball more than 15 times a game, but his nose for the endzone improved last year and Freeman should keep defenses slightly more honest this year.
-
(142) Vince Young - If he turns into the 200/50/2/1/1 guy he seemed to be at times last year, this will be a tremendous value (and potential keeper).
-
(167) Green Bay - Didn’t like any of the offensive players left much. They were good last year, and if nothing else they get Detroit twice.
-
(170) Devin Thomas - Best player left on Yahoo’s board. Maybe McNabb will make a legit starter out of him. Probably he won’t.
-
(195) Mason Crosby - One of only two kickers to finish in the top 5 in scoring at the position for three straight years (Kaeding is the other). Consistency is worth a lot in a kicker.
-
(198) Chicago - Dunno if they ever turn back into the old Bears D, but they start the year with Detroit.
-
(223) Mike Thomas - Mike Sims-Walker’s understudy, and the other starter in Jax. Tremendous keeper potential, and should produce 700+ yards either way.
Overall, I’m giving my draft a B+. I don’t like all the WR production I’m going to be wasting, but every player was a good value where I got them.
If anyone wants to offer a really good running back for one of my backup RBs and one of my wideouts, I’m listening. Failing that, I’ll consider trading Eli or Vince and one of my wideouts for a star QB.
ETA: Omni, you seem to have half the league drafting my roster.

Got that fixed, sorry guys, my Excel-fu is rusty and I was rushing. I reported the first post so hopefully a mod will be along to delete it to avoid confusion.
When it goes through we can update it. The draft results are the draft results, unless I missed something.
Was there something weird going on? I could have sworn that the league page said 10:15 CST. I know for sure that the league pages for the Auction and Dynasty league the time displayed was in Central time as selected in my preferences, but for some reason this one wasn’t. Bizarre, I really don’t think I’m crazy.
- (6) Michael Turner RB
- (23) Tony Romo QB
- (34) Matt Forte RB
- (51) Jermichael Finley TE

Michael Turner - Best available back in round 1. Would have preferred if Gore had fallen here, but happy I wasn;t stuck having to take Steven Jackson (who I love, but whose life & health I fear for). I do think Turner bounces back healthy and scores a bunch on a team that will need to keep their defense off the field.
Tony Romo - Really wanted Brady here, but the best WR were already cleaned out and I didn’t like any of the backs remaining (with one exception - more on that later). Happy enough to lock up Romo here, as I feel he was the last top-tier QB left on the board. He has real upside if Bryant turns out to be the real deal and Felix gets on the field for a few more dump & runs, too. Anothe rpick I am happy with.
Matt Forte - I thought about him in round 2, but gambled he would last until 3.6. This is about the only such gamble I won tonight, but I’ll take it. I think he is being undervalued this year. If I am wrong about him, then my season might get ugly fast - my only other backs need injuries in front of them to be more than spot replacements. But I am very happy with Forte in the 3rd.
Jermichael Finley - This is earlier than I like to grab a TE, especially in a year as deep as this one, but looking at the draft board I saw 5 WR & 3 RB that I had rated pretty much on a par, with 3 Keepers between me and mynext pick. And I really love Finley this year. With Jackson waiting for me as a keeper next round, I decided to pull the trigger on the early TE. If I hadn’t already grabbed 2 RB I might have taken Jerome Harrison here, but I had so I didn’t.
Garcon => Mike Wallace - I had Garcon and Wallace rated essentially equal on my board. When Wallace was still available at the Jammers’ 6th pick, swapping them out to pocket an 11 was an easy choice. It also helped make me feel a little better about grabbing Finley early. Plenty of WR depth to find a plug & play guy in round 11 (or so I thought)
Desean Jackson - Keeper. And I am grateful for at least one bright spot coming out of last season.
Devin Hester - Wanted 1 or 2 more young WR with upside potential to match with Wallace/Jackson. I find emerging WR to be much more tantalizing this year than emerging RB (Jahvid Best being teh exception, but he was long gone). I like Hester to be a great fit for Martz’ scheme and to take a big stride as a WR. Folks foget he never played the position in college, so he is essentially going into his second year on teh WR learning curve in an offense designed to get maximum value from speed at the edge and WR who excel in space. A few punt returns added in for spice and I like it in round 7.
Jacoby Jones - Pretty much teh same answer as Hester. Emerging young talent on a team that throws a ton. I look for him to beat out Walters in every way that matters and feast on the underbellies of coverages that roll to Johnson. Add in a few PR for spice, and you have a nice pick in round 8. My WR are coming together.
Willis McGahee - time for some RB depth. Maybe past time, actually, but I kept not liking the value on teh board for RB so I waited to grab my 3rd until here. The only question for me was whether to go McGahee, Taylor, or McFadden. I don;t trust Bellichck to let me know week-to-week what back(s) he will use, and McGahee has more left in the tank than Fred. McFadden has bust written all over him, though he may still get featured in Oakland with Bush’s injury history. Went with McGahee here because the Ravens offense looks ready to score in bunches and they like to pull Rice inside the 20. The man from Miami knows how to leech him some touchdowns, and I’m all about TD for my 3rd RB. If Rice goes down, he also has a huge upside in that offense.
Minnesota DEF - Was not crazy about the skill players on the board, decided to go for a stud D a little on the early side. Sacks & INT never go out of style, so I went for the men in purple.
Lee Evans - Value pick. Was pretty happy with my young WR, but if any of them flame out, Evans should be a steady presence. He’s the clear #1 WR on a bad team with no good QB in sight. That has to be worth something. (An 11th round pick, apparently)
Larry Johnson - I had a couple of sleeper/keeper picks that I liked still on the board, but I thought they had a little life left in them so I decided to go with the handcuff RB that I thought most likely to get significant carries. Grandmama was the winner. Portis is not what he was the last time Shanny fed him the carries. Of course, Grandmama isn’t half the back she used to be, either. Really wishing now that I had used this pick on either Sam Bradford or Mike Williams. Because . . .
Bernard Scott - Keeper.
Ugh. Nothign against Scott, who has decent value this late as a handcuff to a power back with a history of injuries + a 3rd down & KR option for emergency duty, but I would have rather spent this pick on a rookie with massive upside (Bradford, Mike Williams). Should have just kept my (wirtual) mouth shut about Scott. Unless Benson goes down, of course, in which case I am a genius. :smack:
Joshua Cribbs - my keeper prospects (Sanchez, Hardesty) keep vanishing before my eyes. Decide to go for a plug in sub with potential on any given week. Best return man in the game qualifies. Especially since I expect the Browns to be receiving a lot of kickoffs this year.
Josh Freeman - the next-to-last deep keeper prospect on my board, and a pure homer pick from this Tampa ex-pat. Gives me a bye week issue in week 4, but I’ll figure out something by then I’m sure.
Garrett Hartle - I needed a kicker, I got one. Hartley was great down the stretch and in the playoffs. And the Saints will put up a lot of points. shrug It’s a kicker - how much analysis do you want?
Omni - I am also in central time, and the draft notice on Yahoo consistently read 9:15 PM CST for me. Maybe you got confused with Ellis’ post in this thread indicating 10:15 EST?
Oh god, it’s true. That’s actually my team? And here I thought I couldn’t do worse than 11th. I think my lack of preparation and the studs kept last year (by everyone else) really shows here.
QBs - Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb
I like Ryan this year, and he’s a fine value in the 10th… but I’m not sure he’s good enough to help me contend. Just about everyone expects a “bounce back” year from him (sorta unfair since he was actually pretty good last year and it seems like he’s being punished for his expectations being too high) but I don’t think anyone expects him to put up the 3500+/28/15 that I would probably need to contend. McNabb fits much better in Washington than he ever did in Philly, and I expect he’ll have one of his best seasons there. Even then, I doubt it’s enough. I don’t feel confident here. I think I have a very average situation here with little upside.
RBs - Ryan Mathews, LeSean McCoy / Jonathan Stewart, Fred Taylor, Keiland Williams
I hate this. I figured, with McCoy coming back, if I could make him my flex I’d be in a great position. Mathews was just about the only back left at the 8th spot and I hate him as my first rounder. Couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start unless I drafted Favre in the first or something.
McCoy is fine as a 2nd or a flex (I see him more as a flex…) and I hate Stewart as my second back. I won’t ever feel confident starting him as the second back in a committee. He’s a fine keeper type pick, but he’s not even keeper eligible.
I missed out on the other mid round backs I wanted (Portis, Forte, etc.) and ended up taking Taylor. Whatever, he’s technically the starter. If he can stay healthy all season he’ll earn back that pick and be a fine #4. Keiland Williams is a total “close your eyes and swing for the fences” pick, and I knew he would generate a little scoffing. But the reasoning (to me) is sound: he’s the third back in a run friendly(ish) offense where the two guys ahead of him are both threats to retire/die/tear ACLs at any point. Are you telling me it’s likely both Portis and Johnson (whom the 'Skins don’t even seem to like much) will stay healthy, let alone be around next season? If you give me a… 25% chance that my 15th rounder could end up starting by week 10 and be a workhorse by next season, I’ll take it every time. I had no one else I wanted in that spot, anyway.
WRs - Steve Smith (Car), Malcom Floyd / Peirre Garcon (acquired via trade with Spiritus Mundi), Bernard Berrian, Legedu Naanee, Nate Burleson
I originally intended to draft two RBs with my top two picks and try to get lucky with 2 out of four of the eight or so mid round guys I really liked. When Mathews was the last RB I got and there wasn’t anything else appealing, I decided to go WR with my 2. Unfortunately, everyone else did too and I got stuck with Steve Smith. Oh god, what an awful #1 he is. This is a nightmare. I have two starters on Carolina? What the fuck?!
Malcom Floyd is fine, but he makes my second starter on San Diego, which I’m not thrilled about either. There’s a good chance either he or Garcon explode into a legit #1/#2 for me and I’ll be okay here. I like Garcon too, as I think he becomes the Reggie Wayne to… Reggie Wayne’s Marvin Harrison. Something like that. Bernard Berrian as my #4 (and I’ll put him up in the running for league’s best #4) makes for a great high upside play. Legadu Naanee might be my best pick, I can’t believe I got him in the 13th. I’m not as high on him as others, but he makes for a really interesting possible keeper, and if nothing else, is a starting WR who should see a high number of targets in the 13th. Burleson was just a throw in from the trade with Spiritus Mundi. He’s a starter who should see some openings opposite Calvin Johnson. Like someone said during the draft, “Burleson never fails to disappoint,” but there isn’t another guy available in the 16th who could get 800-950 yards.
TE - Brent Celek
Love it, love it even more for a 12th round pick. He was a stud last season and will only get better with his great chemistry with Kolb. I predict he leads the team in catches again and yards. One of the few bright spots on my team.
K - Robbie Gould
Uh… he;s in an offense that should move the ball a lot but doesn’t have anyone who can consistently punch the ball in the endzone. Sounds good! I didn’t mean to take him in both my leagues, but he’s fine.
Def - Indianapolis
Ugh. Are they any good? I don’t even know. They fit this team perfectly; middling and unimpressive.
I give myself a C. It’s only fitting as my team seems perfectly average in every way. This team doesn’t inspire me and hardly interests me, and unlike last season, I don’t even see a lot of potential keeper options. McCoy if he turns into Westbrook will be fine in the 2nd, but I don’t see it. Malcom Floyd would be fine if he turns into a legit #1 (not unreasonable…). Can I keep Brent Celek for next season now? Legadu Naanee could even be a good keeper next season.
And if I win the lottery, Keiland Williams gains a chance when Portis goes down and LJ inevitably disappoints and angers his coaches… he runs with it (heh) and earns the outright job heading into 2011. Oh god, this is my team. I’m hoping for Keiland Williams (who even legit football nerds hadn’t heard of).
Well, I royally fucked this one up. This league is always the one that I gear my draft preparation for each season and with 3 truly awesome keepers I was pretty damn fired up for it. Somehow I got it in my head that the draft was at 10:15 CST, not Eastern. I got distracted hanging out with my girlfriend and cooking dinner and when I popped up to check in on my draft at 9:45 I see that we’re already in round 7. Then as I’m getting prepared to make my pick at the turn in the 9th round Yahoo’s app craps out on me and I can’t get back in. I run home from my girlfriends to home and get logged on in a nick of time to land Gaffney who was a bit of a spur of the moment decision considering the drama involved.
Anyways, it’s especially frustrating because aside from that defense and kicker pick I’m pretty satisfied with the autodraft. Had things not crapped out on Yahoo’s end things would have been pretty solid.
I’m gonna run through my picks and give my thoughts on what happened and what I would have changed. I’ll give some commentary on the results of each round, mostly without the aid of having been there to get the feel of the trends and discussion. Later I’ll plow through the entire draft and give team capsules for everyone and break down my own team from a global perspective.
Omni’s Omnipotents
1 (13) DeAngelo Williams (RB-Car)
All in all this is a pretty good auto-pick. I think Williams might actually be the value of the first round. Almost all of the RBs have questions this season, perhaps moreso than I can ever recall in fantasy. Even AP has his detractors this year and with Chris Johnson kept him at #1 overall may not even be a good value. I’m surprised that Matthews and Greene came off the board before Williams, I like both guys a lot, but not better than Williams. Jonathan Stewart is a constant problem here, but less so than the doubts I have about Matthews (rookie), Greene (only had 15+ carries in 2 games last year), Grant (low upside) and Jackson (crappy team, injuries). Of the WRs taken in the 1st round, Johnson’s the only one I like better than Williams. Long story short, this is the pick I’d have made if I’d have been there.
As for the rest of the round…WOW! Wish I’d have been there because I’d have been doing a little heckling. I have no arguments with the first 3 picks, I’m glad I don’t have to worry about MJDs knee issue but I’d have hated drafting him #2 overall. Love Frank Gore this year too, smart guy to take at 3. Steven Jackson at #4 is a bummer. I overpaid for the guy in the Auction league after seeing Bradford play QB in preseason, but he’s not better than Turner. After Turner I think it’s a big drop off and time to start looking at WR. The biggest shocker in a round of shockers is probably Manning at #5, I loves me some Peyton but not over Brees and Rodgers and certainly not in the first half of the first round. Craziness that. The other surprise is Moss over Johnson, which is nuts when you consider Moss’ age. I like the Pats offense a lot this year but that’s a bit kooky. I’m also way down on Wayne this season, I have him ranked between Fitz and Smith.
Crazy first round this year, the bizarre RB dynamic this season seems to have people trying new strategies.
2 (16) Calvin Johnson
I’m not in love with Megatron in general, the guy can’t stay healthy and that team isn’t great but I’m expecting a nice increase in output from the Lions this year. I like the rest of the offensive additions and the North’s secondaries are all in trouble, but I’m not sure I like drafting a WR on a terrible team with a young QB this high. However, when I scan the players who were available here I’m not sure who else I would have selected. Drafting a Flex RB would have been tempting but the only guy I’d have considered here is Foster and when it comes down to it, Megatron blows him away. I’m thinking my big debate would have been between Johnson and Marshall here, I honestly don’t know who I’d have picked. I give this auto-pick my stamp of approval.
The rest of the second round lacks the drama of the first. It’s a pretty solid result up and down the list, guys with big upside but some serious question across the board. I think Brees is the steal of the draft thus far and the best value of the round. The WRs went in the order they should have and the RBs are all defensible due to the dearth at the position, but man I’m glad I wasn’t the one spending a 2nd round pick on the likes of Foster, Thomas, Addai and Best. Best is the most interesting but has the highest bust potential, Foster scares me the most I just don’t see any RB in Houston being that productive and Kubiak has proven to give a very short leash already.
Ray Rice is obviously a great keeper here, though I worry about a slump from him with all the emphasis they’ve placed on the WR corps this offseason.
3 (41) Chris Johnson - Keeper
Gotta love this keeper. Thankfully the computer couldn’t screw this one up, that I get him after Rice and in the same round as Mendenhall and Beanie Wells is pretty damn nice.
All but 2 of the picks in this round were RBs, that’s downright loopy. There’s quite a bit of upside to be had here and of the group I like Forte and Brown the most, Brown could be a fantasy stud and Forte looks poised to have a much improved season and could be big if Martz works out. I love Bush and Spiller, but both guys are way over drafted here, Bush because of injury and Spiller because of the Bills. Stewart might be the steal of the round if my first round pick ends up being a bust, but so long as Williams is around his ceiling is capped below the rest of the guys in the round. The two Cowboys guys are the worst picks of the round, I hate that running game this year.
4 (44) Dallas Clark
Here’s the first auto-pick that I really have a quarrel with. I agree that Clark is the top TE in the league this season so I don’t mind that, but there’s just so many TEs that have great potential that I wouldn’t have burned a high pick on one. There’s a good argument to be made that getting a great one when everyone else will have a average one is a plus, but I’d have rather stuck with Olsen at the end of the draft and gotten some extra WR depth, maybe Garcon, Sims-Walker or Bowe.
The computer appears to have triggered a run though which probably benefits me in the end. With 3 of the 8 non-keeper picks being TEs my team didn’t really fall behind as bad in addressing other positions. I really dislike the other players drafted in this round after the 4th pick. Welker should be great and I question Sims-Walker a lot but they are both great values here. Forsett and Bush feel like panic picks to me.
5 (52) Thomas Jones
Happy to have turned a keeper into a second pick in the 4th round, really wish I’d have been able to pick it myself though. Jones isn’t a bad pick, for whatever reason the staff in KC seems intent on using him over Charles, but I think there’s a very good chance that they’ll see the error of their ways by week 3 or 4. There’s a pretty good chance that he’s a TD vulture and Charles doesn’t have the look of a back who’ll survive being a workhorse. I think I’d have picked a WR here, Garcon or Bowe, had I been drafting but seeing how the rest of the draft played out I’ll probably feel lucky to have Jones if Williams or Johnson falter.
The back end of the 4th was mostly keepers, Benson, Rodgers and Schaub are all golden ones.
6 (69) Philip Rivers - Keeper
I’m not loving Rivers this year and were he not a keeper I probably wouldn’t have drafted him this season, but in the 6th round with guys like Rodgers, Schaub, Cutler and Ryan unavailable it’s pretty much a no brainer. Hopefully the loss of LDT and VJax won’t undermine him too much. He’s a heck of a lot better than Kolb and Flacco which is who I’d have been looking at around now.
The 5th round on the whole is a pretty even one. Jerome Harrison is the best pick of the round I think, especially now that Hardesty is out of the picture and I think I’d be willing to trade him straight up for Thomas Jones who went 2 rounds earlier. Bryant and Floyd are the best bets for keeper gold.
Jamaal Charles is the other notable keeper and as a Thomas Jones owner I really hope this one turns out to be a bust.
7 (72) San Francisco
Here’s where the auto-draft really starts ass-fucking me. Now, the San Fran defense is probably gonna be awesome and that division they play is really really sucks. With Derek Anderson, Matt Hasselbeck and Sam Bradford as opponents in 6 games the chances of some big time numbers are excellent. Hell, there’s even a chance that Charlie Whitehurst and Max Hall could be involved. These are all very good things for the Niners defense. They also face the Raiders, Chiefs, Eagles, Buccaneers and Broncos, teams with shall we say, uncertain QB situations. Still, I’m a fantasy football purist and believe that you draft a defense in round 15 at the earliest. Mike Wallace, Johnny Knox, LDT and Donald Brown would have all been very tempting targets here. Me not being there could end up being the best thing that happened to me, maybe, just maybe it saved me from Fantasy Football dogma. It will be an interesting experiment.
As for the rest of the round, there’s some really great players taken here. I like LDT more than any of the RBs taken in rounds 4 and 5. Donald Brown has a hell of an upside. The WRs are downright delicious, I think I’d have felt great getting any of them in this round, especially Bowe. The only ugly pick of the round is Houshmanzadeh, who is entering an uncertain situation at best. Yeah he’ll probably start at some point with Clayton gone, but that’s a crowded group on a team that still runs first. He was released for a reason afterall.
Solid if unspectacular keepers in Cutler, Jackson and Bradshaw. Aside from Bradshaw, I’m not sure the other two are that far below were they’d have been drafted anyways.
8 (97) Michael Crabtree - Keeper
I don’t know if Crabtree is gonna be a steal or not, but drafted him last year in hopes that he’d return that value as a keeper this year. Thankfully he played well enough to make that seem like a wise move and he was valuable enough last year to get me to the title game down the stretch. I wish he had someone better than Alex Smith throwing to him and his diva attitude concerns me, as did that blow up with Vernon Davis of all people, but I’m really counting on him to help my team. Most people are higher on him than me, so perhaps they are right.
This was another really nicely conducted round. Sidney Rice might be an absolute steal here, he’s basically last year’s Crabtree pick. The guy has the ability to be an elite WR and if he come back around midseason he could have a impact for the playoffs. Unfortunately next year he might be stuck with Tarvaris, but who knows. Portis is sick at this late of a stage. The guy is a starter in a Shanahan offense! He’s another guy I’d swap Thomas Jones for straight up. Tim Hightower also should have been selected ahead of guys like Donald Brown, Leon Washington and Reggie Bush. A bunch of fantastic WRs with great upside here, there might be a sickening number of keepers from this round next year. Big Ben will probably be an absolute monster pick too.
Which leads us too…
**
9 (100) Stephen Gostkowski**
And now the wheels absolutely come off. I was logged in before this pick, and without the consternation of having been late I probably would have been watching these guys drafted before this pick and panicking. I’d have had Rice, Big Ben, Aromashodu, Portis, Holmes, Vincent Jackson and Bernard Berrian in my queue desperately hoping one of them made it down to me. Then Yahoo proceeded to crap out on my and not let me back in as this pick passed by. I can without question say that I’d have landed Vincent Jackson here and done an absolute happy dance around the room. Jesus H. Crimeney on a cracker.
See all that rationalizing I did about the SF defense? None of that here. Yeah, I’m high on the Pats offense, but fuck me, a kicker in the 8th round? Ouch, my ass is killing me. When Hamlet is keeping Jackson next year I’m gonna be dying inside. And for the love of Pete, I was here in time to actually avoid this! Fucking Yahoo.
Sigh…
The rest of the round was nifty, I really like Jones, Berrian, Williams, Maroney and Edwards but that Jackson pick flat out dominates the round. Hillis and Taylor are both reaches and Winslow and Shiancoe are nice values and explain my issue with that early TE pick.
More to come, had to break the post up into 2 parts.
10 (125) Jabar Gaffney
Here’s the first pick I actually made. I was looking at my roster and between the tears of the Gostkowski pick I determined that I needed depth at WR and had to start looking for some guys with keeper potential. Gaffney has appeared to be the top target in Denver against all odds, and Orton was quietly very effective last season. If Gaffney continues his preseason performance I’ll find myself very leased with this pick. I’m not sure he’ll be good enough to warrant a flex play, and frankly that’s what I needed here, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
You can see that everyone else started craving keepers in this round in earnest too. Starting with a pair of rookies and a bunch of guys hoping for bounce back years. I’m not impressed with anyone in that group. I’m sure I’m just patting myself on the back here, but I think Gaffney is the guy in this group to have. Zach Miller is really nice and attach to my previous comment regarding TEs.
The keepers here are fine but it’s all about Miles Austin. I love the guy and getting him this late is frigging ridiculous. If he’s 80% what he was last season this might be the best keeper of the draft. I’ll be interested to see how the rest of Dave’s draft looks later.
11 (128) Devery Henderson
Same logic as with Gaffney, should be a productive guy with a shot at being a keeper. Any WR in the Saints offense has value and honestly I don’t see a huge difference between Colston, Meachem and Henderson. Brees scatters it around a ton and last year all three had comparable numbers. From a value standpoint I’m glad I got the last one in this draft since he could easily match or exceed the other two this year, it feels like a coin flip. I’d also rather have the third guy here as opposed to the third guy in New England or Indy. I’m good with this pick and hopefully one of these two guys plays well enough to backup my top two WRs.
Massaquoi is a nice pickup but that Brown passing game is gonna suck when the weather turns. Run DMC could be a steal with Bush hurting, but the guy’s been nothing but a disappointment so far, nice value though. If Bradford is this year’s Matt Ryan, Robinson could be a awesome pick, I was tempted to take him here and decided to gamble and wait.
Lots of keepers in this round. Lots of unimpressive ones I’m afraid. Nicks and Cadillac are probably the best of the group, but you’d like to do better. Ellis says Nicks is gonna be the guy in NY this year maybe he’s right.
12 (153) Sam Bradford
I was getting nervous about a backup QB here, but I also need keepers. Bradford looked so good in preseason that he might actually serve as both for me. I feel really great about the pick, he’s a rookie and the preseason defenses he faced were vanilla, but hopefully he won’t need to start more than 1 game for me all season. Next year when Rivers’ eligibility is up he’ll get me off to a good start as a very late keeper. I was very tempted to wait until after the turn to grab him and save myself an extra round on the keeper value, but Varlos hadn’t taken a backup QB yet and he’s in the same boat with Rodgers.
Everyone seemed to be keen to poach handcuffs in this round. I’m not sure how wise that is, I can’t imagine that guys like Smith, Gerhart, Ringer, Johnson and McKnight will be worth a squirt of piss next season even if the starters ahead of them go down. Poaching a handcuff who is expected to be the starter next year is one thing, poaching a handcuff who’ll only be of value if there’s an injury is a waste of a pick in the 11th round.
Only one keeper in Maclin, a pretty solid one. I agree with the ESPN guys in predicting he’ll be better than Jackson this season for the Eagles.
13 (156) Steve Slaton
Kubiak seems to hate this guy but he’s got talent to burn. If he can learn to hold onto the football he could be a monster again, remember when he was a first round pick? Can we really be sure that Foster won’t cough up the ball in week 2 giving Slaton the job back for the rest of the season? I like this pick a bunch, and if Foster ends up being a stud there’s a decent chance Slaton ends up on another team next year with a starting job. Then again he could be worthless, but he’s playing for a contract.
I almost took Walter instead with that pick, but I’m a Jacoby Jones believer so I went with Slaton, still, Walter might be good again. Not a lot of excitement in the rest of the round, but that Mike Williams pick could be a great one. I have been targeting Williams all over fantasy this week, but now that Housh is gone he’s no longer under the radar. Then again, this is the same guy who was out of football last year so we’ll see. Like the pick, I’d have taken him with my next pick. That he went ahead of Roy Williams is just wrong though, say what you want about the guy but he’s still the starter in a explosive Dallas offense. Are we really that sure that Bryant will kick him to the bench right away? Hardesty is out for the season, it’s a bit too early to draft a keeper who can’t play at all this season if it can be done at all.
14 (181) Rashad Jennings
Lots of action in this round for me, I had pretty much this entire round queued up and ready to go and watched them come off one at a time. Poaching a handcuff of one of the best RBs in the game is a defensible practice and I’m pumped that I did it for the one guy with an immediate injury issue and about 2 or 3 rounds later than everyone else. This MJD injury smells funny so Jennings might be a steal if only as trade bait. I think I’d have prefered Huggins here since I suspect he will have value even without an injury to Cadillac, but it wasn’t to be.
Naanee broke my heart though. I really wanted him and I suppose I shouldn’t have tipped my hand in the Dynasty league. I feel like I alone pumped him up for our little fantasy clique. I couldn’t really defend taking him earlier than this, but I can’t help but wonder if I’d have kept my mouth shut in the Dynasty thread, and gone chalk drafting Dez Bryant there, if I’d have had him here in the 15th or 16th round. Lots of guys scooping up backup QBs, I like Bradford better than them all for next year but for this year Sanchez might be a nice safe backup.
15 (184) Greg Olsen
Remember what I said about Clark…yeah. Could be an excellent value here and protects me from the inevitable Clark injury. We’ll see if Martz is all talk or not, but I’m willing to drink the Kool-aid. One upside to that Kicker/Defense debocale is that these last two picks are now free to use as late, late keepers. Backup TEs are usually a luxury, but with my good keepers and spending a high pick on a starter it’s one I think I can afford.
You can see everyone else going handcuff/keeper crazy here. Ben Tate, Davis, Dixon, Blount and Karim. Not particularly worried about any of them to be honest. It’ll be tough to keep Tate on the roster all season and the rest of the guys aren’t even 2nd stringers. The best pick is Heyward-Bey, who the hell knows if he can play at all, it’s not looking good so far, but Oakland has a new QB and DHB is still a starter and obstensibly the #1 over there. Maybe, just maybe, this is a gamble that’ll pay off.
I didn’t have a pick in the 15th round due to a trade, and there’s not a ton to discuss in that round. People grabbing up kickers, defenses and backup QBs mostly. The guys that stand out are Brandon Lafell, who might end up being the #2 opposite Steve Smith which tends to be a good place to be. He’s disappointed in the preseason but he was on my radar at the end of the draft. Keiland Williams is just the type of no-name guy who could come out of Shanny’s system so I like that pick, I’d have liked it more if he’d have been a Portis handcuff. Williams might be the starter next year and a awesome late keeper. Tebow got taken, I’m still not buying it and he’ll be useless as a backup QB this season, but I get it. Remember what I said about Heyward-Bey, well Murphy is the counter-point to that. One of them has to have value.
**16 (212) Brandon Tate **
Last pick, everyone else is taking kickers and defenses, I’m taking what I hope to be Randy Moss’s replacement and the guy who might take Edelman’s job before the season starts. Pats fans are atitter about him and seem to think he’ll be a red zone gem. We’ll see, I was happy with the pick.
I don’t think so, I was reading it off the top of the page like I did for the rest of the leagues. Who knows, I’ll just blame the woman.
If it makes you feel any better at all, I’m not part of the dynasty league and I don’t think I’ve ever opened that thread. If I have, I doubt I read beyond the first post, so no matter what he wouldn’t have lasted beyond my pick.
I’m shocked he was there at all as he was a big part of the brouhaha over the trade in the auction league too. And he’s a darling of the Fantasy Focus guys. I was literally unable to sit still or even watch the screen as the picks immediately before mine came. But he never would have made your next pick anyway.
Off Constantly - Munch
1 (1) Adrian Peterson
2 (28) Arian Foster
3 (29) Anquan Boldin
4 (43) Wes Welker
5 (70) Jamaal Charles - Keeper
6 (84) Jay Cutler - Keeper
7 (85) Sidney Rice
8 (112) Braylon Edwards
9 (140) Tashard Choice
10 (141) Toby Gerhart
11 (157) Kevin Walter
12 (168) Vernon Davis - Keeper
13 (169) Matt Cassel
14 (196) James Davis
15 (210) Arizona
16 (211) Ryan Longwell
QB - Jay Cutler, Matt Cassel
These are a pair of QBs who I’m counting on in my other fantasy leagues. I’ve got Cutler in 2 and Cassel as my Big Ben fill-in in the Dynasty league, so I suppose I’m hoping that this situation isn’t a total disaster. It pains me a bit to say that I think you’re in a bit of trouble. I actually think Cutler is going to have a pretty solid season this year in fantasy but the guy is going to get absolutely assaulted behind that Bears line. It’s gonna get ugly, he’s a horse and doesn’t get injured but this will be a real test. I like Cutler’s value (which is why I have him in 2 leagues) and you didn’t spend much here, but there will be a lot of sacks and INTs in his future.
If Cutler takes the beating I think he will you might be playing Cassel and that a situation that’s not good for anyone. The guy just sucks and he won’t get any help from the rest of that team, you have to be related to Charlie Weis to want any part of Cassel. Cutler should keep you in most games but he won’t single-handedly win you many and he might lose you a couple.
RB - Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster, Jamaal Charles, Tashard Choice, Toby Gerhart, James Davis
You had the first overall pick and did the only reasonable thing with it. You punted somewhat on QB and will rely on these guys to carry you. This is a very traditionally constructed fantasy team, you went RB-RB and the got a 3rd guy as a flex in the 5th, it’s like a team from 2004. That Charles keeper allowed you to have this luxury and I think it’ll work out pretty well for you. As I already said, I hope Charles falls flat on his face to make my Thomas Jones pick good but I think that’s unlikely. Charles looks like a legit back and could be really dynamic and that Chiefs offensive line might quietly round into form. I dislike the management in KC and they might fuck it up, but Charles may be so good (and their competition so bad) that they won’t be able to. Hopefully Jones gets all the TDs!
Peterson is actually getting talked down a bit this season for a change. I tend to agree, the Minny line was poor last season and I don’t think Favre retains the magic. That will mean a bigger load will fall to the running backs, and the loss of Taylor points to a surge for ADP. But, with that extra work comes extra defensive attention and without the weapons at WR teams will stack the box on him and he’s proven that he can be stopped and will fumble under duress. Peterson is the right pick but he might not give you the numbers you hope for.
Foster is a really interesting pick. I already discussed my doubts about him in Texas, the guy is unproven to say the least, but he’s the guy for the time being down there. I think I’d have preferred Ronnie Brown or Forte over him but Foster might have a lot of upside. A WR would have been ideal there I think, but the run on them sorta spoiled that. Still, if Foster retains that job and Charles does what people predict you have a scary RB/RB/Flex combo. Maybe better than mine, which I would not have guessed anyone could match.
The backups really suck though and they weren’t really good values either. Choice is nothing and Dallas running backs are to be avoided in general, even if Dallas runs the ball well the odds of Jones and Barber both being hurt again has to be small. Gerhart as a handcuff is reasonable I suppose, but I just think the kid is gonna suck. His running style will have him absolutely lit up in the pros and he’ll be a fumble machine. In the 14th round I might have considered him purely as a security blanket, not in the 10th since he won’t be worth a keeper. Davis is nice, things in Cleveland are uncertain and with Hardesty gone Davis might perform, but that team sucks and will have to throw a bunch.
WR - Anquan Boldin, Wes Welker, Sidney Rice, Braylon Edwards, Kevin Walter
Weird group. I hate Boldin this season, I just don’t like the situation in Baltimore and the combination of age, injuries, new team and the loss of Fitz spell disappointment. At the turn I don’t know who else I’d have taken, there’s a definite gap in talent after Steve Smith, but I suspect you’ll be let down here all year. Wes Welker is a risk but one I’d have been content to take, but I don’t think he gets into the endzone enough to be a WR1 should Boldin fail. I really like the Pats this season and I see no reason to think Welker catches less than 90 balls but in a non-PPR league that might not be enough.
I talked about Sidney Rice before and that stands, I love this pick but it might not be doing to much good. If Boldin or Welker stumble you won’t have Rice to plug in until at least week 8 and by then it might be too late. It think Rice has the talent to be worth a 5th round keeper next year, especially if Favre comes back, but if it’s Tarvaris you might have a tough decision to make.
Edwards will get a leg up on Holmes to be Sanchez’s favorite target, but I think Sanchez sucks. Edwards was a long ways from dynamic last season following the trade and he flat disappeared at times and with Rice out you’ll be counting on him for the bye weeks, and I wouldn’t want to count on Edwards to catch a bus. Kevin Walter is gonna lose out to Jacoby Jones in Texas, so I’m not sure you should expect much from him. I think you’ll regret taking him over one of the Williamses or Benn. I suspect the WR position will be a point of great frustration for you and you’ll have a lot of games where you’re RBs score 50 points and you get squat from the QB/WR positions.
TE - Vernon Davis
There’s virtually zero chance that Davis repeats his numbers from last season, especially the gaudy TD numbers, but he’s still a solid TE and a hell of a keeper. You’re all good at this position and it seems like Davis and Singletary are making sweet music together these days which should keep Davis on the field a ton. If you get 1000/13 from him again this year the issues at WR will be moot. I think 800/6 is more likely but that’s still pretty damn good.
DEF - Arizona
Basically a last round pick. They play in the same crappy division as my Niners so that’s good. they lost some key guys, but they also should be less effective on offense, which in the grand scheme of things might benefit the defense’s fantasy value due to fewer shootouts. I like the pick, they are the 49ers light.
K - Ryan Longwell
Kicker in the last round, very good. Kicker in a dome, very good. Kicker on a team with a potent offense, very good. Kicker on a team that is good in the red zone, not so good.
This is a very good team that was constructed very nicely. Very strong at RB and made all the right moves at the peripheral positions of TE/K/DEF. A few possible keepers. Iffy at WR, but not due to neglect and frankly I could be dead wrong about Boldin and Welker. Depth is a problem especially at RB. Very likely a playoff team.
Potential Keepers: Jamaal Charles, Sidney Rice, Vernon Davis, James Davis
Grade: A-
I have a hunch that the Dynasty talk was the key reason why he was nominated and bid up in the Auction league. Beef heckled me when I conceded the bidding there.
