He Like Me!!! The red-headed stepchild of SDMB Fantasy Football Leagues

Just completed the draft for the other fantasy football league here on the Dope and I must say I’m feeling good. I want to use this thread for on-going discussion and trash talk and the draft review and predictions composed by yours truly and anyone else with a compulsion to ramble about football stuff.

Ellis will be plugging in the rosters as they stand following the draft shortly. For outside reference here’s the truly unique scoring system.

It’s essentially a yardage league that marginalizes RBs some and promotes efficiency of QBs and RBs.

I disagree that it marginalizes runnignbacks. true, it doesn’t allow RB to dominate the top scoring positions, but it makes the dropoff between top-tier and scrubs faster for RB than any other position. The difference between the 1st (S. Smith) and 50th (A. Johnson) ranked WR last year would have been 51 pts. the difference between the top RB and the 10th RB was 58.75 pts. Even if we set aside Alexander’s record-breaking season as a scoring aberation, the difference betwen the #2 RB (LJ) and the 18th (McGahee) was more than 51 points.

The stud RB is still king in this league. The only diffrerence is that you don’t need 3 of them. What teh scoring does do, though, is kill the grind it out RB’s who don’t score TD’s. They aren’t worth the dirt that collects in their facemasks under this system.

There’s a important factor you overlook. There’s only one starting RB position and 4 starting WR/TEs (plus the one flex). Considering that the difference between the top 18 RBs is only somewhat important since really you only need to get 1 of them, however you need at least 3 starting quality WRs and when multiplied by 12 teams you’ll go pretty deep into that top 50 scorers.

2nd tier (meaning after the big 3) RBs will put up similar numbers to the 2nd tier WRs (say, after the top 6 guys) in this league, something you cannot say about any other scoring system.

Well, actually, there are 2 starting RB slots, because one is a WR/RB slot which I think most people will fill with a RB.

The idea was to make your roster look like a NFL starting lineup; in today’s game, teams have one feature back and the 3rd wideout is virtually a starter. Going very deep also mean that you may well end up spending a slot on a return man, which I also think is interesting.

Upon further reflection, I really wish I had gone with Ellis’ suggestion, and had just 1 RB, with 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 WR/TE. That would have made the distinctiveness much more pronounced.

Just some random thoughts from an idiot with too much time on his hands:

  1. Daunte Culpepper the first QB taken? Knee injury and last years abhorrant stats makes that the silliest pick the draft…
  2. Except for D. Davis being taken in the 3rd round AFTER he was put on IR for the season.
  3. I really like Wilson’s team. A great start to the draft, and some outstanding picks in the middle rounds.
  4. Gladiators has some nice rb’s, but are sorely lacking in WR.
  5. Omni, once again, put together a very nice team.

Now, I have to count the hours (12) until my last draft of the season. See you tomorrow.

Not at all. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have to start 2 . . .the team that finds itself with 2 stud RB’s will win this league. The top tier RB’s wil still outproduce the top tier WR’s. And the second tier for WR’s is 60 players deep. (Scoring diffeence between #15 and #75 is less than 2 points/game.)

It isn’t a question of whether your second RB is better than your 4th WR (assuming wither one will be better than your second TE, which seems certain). It’s a question of where you find a reliable positional advantage over your opponenets. Three are 3 places to do that in this league:
[ol]
[li]The big 4 RB’s (Tough luck for those of us drafting 5 and later)[/li][li]The big 4 QB’s (No, I can’t explain the Culpepper pick, either)[/li][li]Finding a stud 2nd RB[/li][/ol]
The WR’s just don’t differentiate themselves enough to drive success. Steve Smith accounted for an amazing 45% of Carolina’s receiving yards last year. To put that into perspective, the best year Randy Moss ever had he accounted for 39%. Plus he returned punts last year. I think his numbers will regress to the mean every bit as much as Alexanders, but even if they don’t – he was only half a point per game better than the next ranked WR, and 2 points/game better than #20.

Set aside Alexander and the next tier of RB’s were all more than 2 points a game better than teh 6th ranked RB. They were all more than 3.5 points/game more productive than #20. Now, if you think we drafters managed to perfectly predict the productivity of the top backs next year, so the top 12 backs are dividd 1/team and nobody has managed to package 2 true studs together . . . well, in that case you are correct. The small differentiations between wideouts will determine who wins. I think it is more likely that someone has managed to stumble upon 2 winning backs, though, and that person will win this league. [caveat – if a QB breaks out with a Manning 04 year, that owner will win it all. Season over for the rest of us. If a single back puts up Alexander 05 numbers, that might be enough to take it all, too.]

Time for womeone to get a new clock.

OK, that’s odd… I dropped off after round 8, letting autodraft take over, and it didn’t draft me a kicker? I was sure my first pick after letting autodraft take over would be a kicker. I think Yahoo’s tweaked their autodraft logic…
Not a biggee, as there were several quality Ks on the waiver wire.

  1. Fanboy pick, set up on auto-draft rankings
  2. Ghost Ship was picked via Yahoo rankings; we needed them to make an even number. I’ll run them up until week 1, after which they will be left to thier own devices.

Not sure how hardcore everyone is in this league, but I wouldn’t object to you handling its byes as well.

Not signing FAs or anything, but if it’s got a starter with a bye, and it has the same position on the bench, that’s a nobrainer swap.

The advanced treatment would be to put its “best” starters in each week, as defined by whomever yahoo has projected to get more points. That would truly make it a yahoo team.

I wouldn’t object to any of this, nor would I object to just leaving it be. My personal preference would be playing it to the best of yahoo’s ability. (Putting the best projected players in as starters each week.)
