He/she Just Stepped Out

Countless times when I call for a specific person working generally for a company, I am told that the individual just stepped out and should be back in ten minutes, one hour or what have you.

Yet, I don’t recall anyone telling me that the person just stepped in.

My question: Why do people step out but not step in?

Could it be that if they step in you just don’t notice?

After all, you can drop in on someone by paying a visit. Stepping in would be close to dropping in. More accurate even, unless they don’t have a roof.

This reminds me of a realtor I had years ago - every time I called her to find out what was going on (I was selling a home in another city) she always said “I was just going to call you!” How amazing we had such a psychic connection.

Maybe the problem is that the person is always stepping in, which you are never told about, but this persone doesn’t like to be in, so is always having to go back out.

Am I the only one who thought this thread was going to be about transsexuals doing the Hokey-Pokey?

Sorry. I’m having a weird day.

It happened again this am and this time the young lady at the other end of the phone line gave me the answer that makes sense to me:

One can say, …he or she just walked in…but if one says: he or she just walked out…it implies that they quit his/her job…or is too angry to stay in the office complex any longer…thusly, stepping out implies nothing else except a brief departure from ones’ original location.

I was thinking something very close to that, actually.

As someone who spent a lot of time as a receptionist, I can say that I have told people that the callee has just stepped in.

I hope that helps.
