Heads Up, Nashvegas Dopers!

I just learned of this, or I would have posted something earlier, but apparently, there’s a little bit of history being made in our town. Lipscomb University’s drama class has been performing a play in the Parthenon!

IIRC, this is the first time something like this has been done. 8PM, Saturday the 17th is the last performance. I’m going to try to make it (depends upon how I feel after I get off work). Even if the play sucks, just seeing the statue is worth it (BTW, the play’s free to the first 100 people, so you can be a cheap date! ;)).

Family troubles will keep me away

Do they have tours of the Parthenon? I’ve been up to it a few times, but never had the opportunity to go inside. I’m pleasantly surprised that Lipscomb is doing that. I’ve had the impression that it was a more conservative school.

Vlad/Igor

Too late for me to make it, but thanks for the heads up. I’ve been to several art exhibits there over the years, including one that was while they were still renovating/refurbishing. It’s a awesome place and I imagine the “gee whiz” aspect of seeing a play there (even a dud play) would be worth the hassle. But I can’t make this one.

Yes, they have tours of the Parthenon (sadly, it seems they’ve pulled down some of the interesting photos from the inside of the building for some reason) and they’re not too expensive. And Lipscomb is a conservative school. You can be expelled from their campus in Italy if you’re caught dancing on the premises.

Apparently, there’s another performance scheduled for tonight as after the play I heard one of the actresses say to someone that her sister was coming to see it “tomorrow.”

The performance of the play was pretty good, though I thought that the directing could have been better. I also felt that they didn’t make good enough use of the space. The best performance was by the gal who played Cassandra (there didn’t seem to be any programs, so I’ve no idea of what the actors names were) and the worst was of the guy who played the Greek soldier. I was disappointed that there was hardly any music used in the play, I was hoping that they’d have used Dead Can Dance in spots, since much of their music would have fit. There were some annoying parts in the performance of the gal who played Hecuba had a warble in her voice which would come and go, it should have stayed gone, IMHO.

Also, the heat from the lower level doesn’t seem to make it up to the statue level, so it was kind of cold, but worth it. Oh, I found a bit of info on Lipscomb’s site. It confirms that there’s another performance tonight, and it lists the actors:
Brittany Willis
Lori Holman
Erin Randolph
Ashley Thompson
Michelle Driver
Drew Smith
Kevin Buckley
Scott Muller
Wes Driver
Katherine Neal
Heather Funderburg
Hannah Ruehl.

I wish I knew who played what, because several of the women in the cast were hotties. (Suprisingly, Cassandra and not Helen was the best looking one.)

Awwww, I wish I had known about this. I LURVE the Parthenon. I swear it is the only thing in Nashville that is truly inspiring. Every chance I get, I take the kids and we just run around collecting acorns in the park until we get tired, then we wander in to gaze in awe at Athena. Everytime we have out-of-town guests, I drag them to the Parthenon. I guess I am just a total nerd.
<hijack>Tuckerfan, I grew up in Gallatin – living in Cottontown now, what a small world!</hijack>

Well, you know, there’s still time to catch tonight’s show! (It lasts about an hour and twenty minutes.) You could have the younun’s one in time for bed, I’m sure. BTW, Batsima lives here in Gallatin as well.

I dunno. I think Bicentennial Park and Cheekwood are pretty inspiring as well. I’m gonna have to insist we tour the Parthenon the next time we’re in town visiting my parents. And maybe the Lane museum, and…

Vlad/Igor, I used to run with the sk8r bois, so I am partial to Legislative Plaza, myself. Actually, archetectually speaking, I adore Nashville. It is always so disappointing going to other (larger) cities and the buildings are just big, and not interesting. As of late, I have been thinking I need to go into town and just wander – my daughter (at 14) is starting to be interested in things more so than when she was younger, I think she would enjoy it.
