What baffles me about the “fat debate” is that, David Kessler’s *The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite * was a best seller in the US. Kessler makes it plain that people in Western society no longer eat out of hunger, they eat because they are conditioned to eat.

I can’t believe that anyone can read it and not be disgusted by the modern food industry. Nor can I understand that they don’t know why they overeat.

I’m sure a few years from now pigging out on shit food food will be seen in the same light as smoking - an addictive behaviour encouraged by big business. I can remember when the first anti-smoking campaigns seemed like quaint, puritan hand waving that wouldn’t gain any momentum. Food and alcohol are next.

Nice try. I have a thyroid condition and I’m not fat.* I could be fat if I ate a ton of food and never exercised, but the thyroid condition on it’s own just doesn’t do it.

It will have to be some other mythical ailment that will make the OP fat despite her self control about food and regular exercising. (I’m really interested to know what that would be, actually).

*Well, currently, I’m somewhat fat. Mostly I have no waist and the girls are getting out of control.

I’d like to see you explain THIS away as something outside your control. The state with the lowest rate of obesity in 2008 has a higher rate than the state with the highest rate in 1985. (Yes, there are states with no data in the earlier graphs, but as those are added in, they start at the lower levels and then increase, suggesting that they probably started at those same levels or lower, versus dramatically dropping then rising again.)

Tell me again about how your genetics make you fat–if you can get words out past the cheeseburger you’re shoving into your mouth. Maybe if you take a couple gulps of that giant Diet Coke, it’ll help.

So you are actually pitting a small number of people I think. I know I have met one person like this, but the rest of us know why we’re fat. I’ve even done something about a few times but sadly always lapsed.

You’ll be hard pressed to find many people that blame anyone or thing besides themselves. They might suggest what contributes to it, but we know it is ourselves.

I’m not saying the unhappy-about-being-fat fat people are blaming something other than themselves. And I resent the over-simplification of the points I’m trying to make.

These people know they are fat because of themselves. But ‘themselves’ could be weak-willed, always hungry, never satisfied by normal meal sizes, and I sympathise with someone who has to go through life feeling that way and I understand that they will give in to the cravings.

I am just saying that many fat people have different psychology than a typical thin person who isn’t always craving food.
