Not long ago, I was out at one of those coffee/bagel carts in Midtown Manhattan, buying a coffee, and in front of me was this really obese woman buying a big doughnut - so obese, she seemed to have difficulty breathing and couldn’t walk properly due to fat deposits on her legs. Part of me wanted to bark at her about the stupidity of her eating habits!
Why don’t people care about themselves? It truly depresses me to see people throw their lives away.
Yes, some people persist in self-destructive habits – smoking, eating a poor diet, drinking too much, taking drugs, starting threads which could be seen as “fat-bashing” by some Dopers…
Even if your assessment of this woman’s life problems based on a minute or two of standing behind her in line is essentially correct (and that’s giving you the benefit of the doubt), I’m not sure that singling out “fat people” is either constructive or likely to provoke much in the way of constructive responses. You could have left the word “fat” out of the subject title and still had a valid point.
I’m fat. You wanna know why ? Because I eat more energy than I use. I makes no fucking difference how you’re born. That is all ** bullshit**. How many fucking obese people do you see in Ethopia or Sudan for christs sake ? Yeah, you may be pre-disposed to being overweight (as I am) but there’s only one reason you’re overweight - you eat too much.
“How do you know the doughnut wasn’t just a one of [sic] treat ?” If you’re fucking obese, don’t eat treats. Jesus H Christ, it’s not fucking rocket science.
It’s the same as money - you spend more than you earn, you’ll be broke.
Yeah, I know, but these are the people that bitch about being “born fat” etc. etc. As I said, I’m fat and I take it on the chin. In fact, I was really fat - now I eat healthily and go to the gym 4 times per week. I’m not fat anymore, but I could be.
Point is, I never bitched about being born that way, or being unlucky, or said I couldn’t help it…
One doughnut. One single doughnut. How is this unhealthy eating habits?
I have a dear friend who was morbidly obsese, really alarmingly large, so big that I once saw a picture of a circus side-show worker and said to myself, ‘now, she’s not so big- not even as big as my friend.’
She joined Weight Watchers and is doing really well. She’s lost a hundred pounds already, is noticeably thinner, and moves a lot more comfortably.
But if you didn’t know her, you might think the same thing as the OP- she doesn’t move very well, and she is still very, very big. You might even think that she isn’t taking care of herself. Because you didn’t see the way she walked a hundred pounds ago.
And, yes, her eating plan does include room for a doughnut for breakfast from time to time.
So, the anti-antifat people can come in here and do their thing, and welcome to them, but I say, what right do you have to make assumptions about a complete stranger doing a totally normal thing like buying a doughnut?
Uh-oh. Having just slammed nisosbar in this thread I wander into this one and encounter even more jerkish behaviour by the same poster.
I’ll let other posters beat you up over your ‘fat-bashing’. A few words of advice though, seeing from your post count that you’re a new memeber at this forum.
Actually, it’s based on more than a minute or two (actually, I know this woman personally, though I didn’t mention it). Her eating habits are consistent with the idea that a high fat diet of greasy, sugary foods leads to weight gain.
I’m not fat anymore, but I know all about being fat, for the purposes of this argument.
The reason I said I was, is because people would just kick the fuck out of me if I went barging on without a disclaimer.
And, Yeah, that bit about all fat people bitching about being born that way is a generalisation, but it makes me want to start kicking fat-ass when they do it. And God almighty, we all know several fatsos who’ve gone on that “don’t blame me” rant…
Can I go on a rant here about idiotic rants about other people’s personal appearances in a medium where nobdy can SEE the object of your rant/pity/derision?
And how do we know that you’re not some anorexic, bulemic, tooth-enamel destroying exercize Nazi just waiting to have a stroke from low cholesterol and too many reps on your favorite gym implement?
We don’t. Just like YOU don’t. What you see, unless you monitor every bite this woman takes, is part of the picture. And if you have the time and interest to monitor every bite someone else takes, you need to get a life, as well as a clue.
The following took place within the last month at a large theme park in Florida:
Scene: Towards the front of a long, long line for a ride. Sweltering heat. In through the side access gate comes three morbidly obese people in motorized wheelchairs. Up to the front of the line, where all are amazed to see the three hop more or less sprightly out of their chairs and into the ride. Their chatter and jollity help to scrub away lingering suspicions that they are cruelly disabled in some other way. People of all colors and creeds in said long line look upon scene with disgust and - well, basically disgust. Lots of muttering all around.
Difficult-at-the-time-to-avoid conclusion: those three people were basically too fat to walk - too fat to walk! - , and so use motorized wheelchairs to not only get around but also gain the many advantages and conveniences our society rightly allows to the truly disabled.
Whether that’s actually true or not, riding around in a motorized wheelchair is definitely a bad public relations gesture for this type of person. It just looks bad.
If the OP were evincing a genuine concern for the health and welfare of the morbidly obese, then I’d be inclined to cut him/her a break, but this seems to be just another chance to sneer at fat people.
Although good exercise and eating habits keep me in shape, I have a great deal of sympathy for the obese, because some of my immediate family have this problem. Obese people are the targets of incredibly cruel, hurtful comments from assholes like the OP, from strangers openly criticizing the contents of their grocery carts to making “Mooing” sounds on the street (all real-life incidents).
Sure, I’d like to see the obese folks in my life make better choices, but the way to do that is through positive encouragement and love, not through anti-fat bigotry and contempt for the heavy folks in this world.
And for the other folks in this thread. . .
Doughnuts are poison and shouldn’t be eaten by anyone. Sorry, but tasty as they may be, doughnuts contain 250 to 400 calories apiece, more than half of them fat calories. Even if you keep off the weight and appear thin and fit, those little pastries are coating your arteries with plaque and shortening your life. Sure, doughnuts may be enjoyable, but so are cigarettes, and I don’t think anybody should use them either.
That’s a stupid non sequitur reply. Coffee has its negatives , but it has some positive qualities as well–commercially baked pastries have none. In addition, coffee has zero calories and fat, but doughnuts have plenty of both.
