I had trouble with the little bastards digging in my potted plants over the summer; application of hot pepper flakes seemed to take care of the problem. But one of the persistent little bastards tackled my poinsettia today and ended up knocking it off the table, breaking two of the branches in the process. It was a beautiful (green) poinsettia, and now it’s flat.
I have completely emptied the freezer except for the ice cubes. Somehow I managed to fit it all into the upright freezer, partly by tossing a few things that did not look edible and putting things in the fridge that I can cook over the next week. I also ordered a countertop icemaker which will arrive Saturday. Then I’m going to completely defrost the freezer and see what can be done to get it working properly.
And … the body shop can’t take the car until December 4th. Kind of like my doctor, who (usually) wants to see me in September or October for my annual visit, but not this year. December 6th for that. I’m used to waiting for months for a specialist appointment, but the PCP? That’s a new one.
check out wholesalers, food distributors or foodservice providers … that stuff is high margin supermarket stuff, at pharmacy prices …
see if you can get normal food into your kid by tricking it (e.g. make it look fancy, or like superheros or something like that - my wife layouted small sausages into a face shape on the plate and that did the trick)… the more low-maintainance you manage to raise him the better your quality of life will be for all - IOW every little achievment today will have huge paybacks over the years.
also: chances are you can get way better prices in different sales channels (possibly buying volume)
I can’t see how this breaks down. Divided evenly, that’s $133 per person per week, or $19 of food a day each, but it seems unlikely your little fella is eating that much in protein waffles. With what you describe, it doesn’t seem right.
I have a squirrel story that might be unbelievable, but it really did happen. The squirrels kept digging up my plants. I tried everything, but nothing ever worked. But then maybe they felt bad about it, because they started bringing me gifts. The nicest one was a fairly large Christmas cactus. Not in a pot, just the plant, on my porch. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to do anything with it until the weather got really cold, and it froze before I repotted it. But it was a nice thing for the squirrels to do, anyway.
It’s all dried foods. For my husband, nuts. For my son, dried fruit of every variety, all the crackers are specially fortified with protein therefore extra expensive. Then there are the frozen things like nuggets with hidden vegetables which are really expensive too. It’s not me, it’s my kid and my husband. My husband has thirteen food allergies so anything that doesn’t grow out of the ground has to be specialty. For my son it’s the cost of products made with extra protein or whole grain crackers or whatever. I try to give him as much variety as possible within the limitations of what he’s willing to eat.
My son will starve and lose weight rather than eat food he finds threatening. When he started daycare he would not eat the served meals and prior to his diagnosis we weren’t allowed to send him with his own food. So he would go the entire day without eating. He lost four pounds. That’s a lot for a 2.5 to 3 year old. Once we got his diagnosis we filled out ADA paperwork and now he can eat his preferred foods - he’s back on track now. But lately it’s harder and harder to get him to eat.
I’ve managed to get him to start eating shredded carrots but only through bribery. I tried the same trick with cucumber and he couldn’t even stand it on the table next to him. He covered it up with his plate.
Frankly I think we could make a lot more progress if my husband was as concerned as I was about the amount of money we’re paying on food. But he’s pushed back pretty much every time I’ve brought it up. He never pays attention to how much I’ve budgeted for groceries. It’s frustrating. (Note: I am a perpetrator in the ordering in department, but I am working on that - and it’s a separate line item in my budget.)
But he has shown willingness to try shopping somewhere else. So maybe we’ll try something.
I was stupidly excited about going to work in my goofy Halloween costume and my dog’s homemade matching one. Yes, it’s extra. But she comes to work with me every day, so she had to have one.
Then yesterday, what seemed to be (and maybe is?) an eyebrow zit got more and more swollen and bothersome. As of this morning, half my face is very swollen. My eye is swollen shut. I have one hell of a headache. I’m waiting for urgent care to open because this is Not Normal. I’ll have to uber there, which is a pain, but I don’t think it’s safe to drive when I can’t see properly.
Here’s hoping they can do something quickly and I can just go to work. I have stuff to get done. I don’t have time for this.
I left my good roll of duct tape on top of my Jeep earlier this year, and it fell off when I got on the interstate. (._. )
Earlier this summer, a glazed terra cotta planter got broken on my porch (by a human), and I thought it got cleaned up, but random pieces keep appearing on the porch railing. Maybe the squirrel has been feeling bad about leaving a giant mess?
I know, right? I usually see my PCP for my annual physical in mid to late October. Last year I called in mid September to make an appointment and the first opening they had was the day after Christmas! WTF?
First World Problems: I got a cool Halloween-themed matcha latte at my local coffee shop. Somehow I lost the straw when I put it the cupholder in my car, so I couldn’t drink it while I was driving. So sad!
I talked to my husband and we are going to try it! Aldi first, and then Kroger for whatever we can’t find. Thanks for the suggestion.
I may start a thread about this, but something really fucking strange is going on with my foot. It started Sunday while I was driving and it felt like a bug was trapped in my shoe, like a tiny fluttering. But it also feels like an electric shock. I checked my shoe - no bug. I feel it whether I’m in shoes, socks, or barefoot. Just a tiny little fluttering electrical shock feeling right in the ball of my foot.
I have spent at least 90 minutes this morning trying to sign up for T-Mobile internet. The online portal only worked up to a point, and so I called the phone number. The customer service representative was very helpful but I had to give all my information several times, to him and to the credit person, only to be told that I needed to unlock or unfreeze my credit at one of the three credit rating places, but they couldn’t tell me which one, so I had 3 more numbers to call. TransUnion has a terrible automated system. Makes me give all personal information, then “does not understand my answer” to a yes/no question and hangs up on me. EquiFax asked about a billion questions over and over, some were about old accounts which had been closed for years. And at that point I still wasn’t sure that either of those companies were where my account/records/report was locked, blocked, frozen, or whatever. At least I never had to call Experian. I understand that they have to make sure that I am who I say I am before messing around with my credit, but it was very exhausting. I am still waiting for T-Mobile to call me back to complete the process. I had AT&T internet for maybe 40 years and am finally trying another service. Yikes!!
Actually I do remember one Christmas where the meal was meatless chili. Everyone was happy! And much easier than trying to fix several different things so everyone has something to eat.
