Very sorry Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman aren’t involved, but Mike Mignola is, and has given his blessing. Looks like it could be fun.
I found Hellboy himself to be the least interesting part of the trailers. Something about his face was just wrong. I always thought recasting would be very difficult after Perlman (understandably) said he was done with the role. And Ian McShane is poor replacement for John Hurt as well.
Having said that, a lot of the trailer looks fun - Baba Yaga’s hut, the monster strolling down the Thames, etc.
Wasn’t Perlman pushing for Hellboy 3 pretty much up until the reboot was announced? I don’t remember him ever saying he was done.
I swear I read an interview a few years ago where he said he wouldn’t play Hellboy again, because he was getting too old and the makeup/prosthetics was just too much to handle. Can’t find it though.
Kind of getting annoyed with reboots. The del Toro/Perlman films were both excellent.
What’s next? A reboot of Wolverine without Hugh Jackman?
I’ve heard the name Dougray Scott bandied about. He was originally going to get the role before he had to pull out due to a filming conflict.
Seeing that Disney just bought out Fox and all the X-Men, and considering that Jackman is over 50, I’d put the chance of that at roughly 100%, give or take.
They’ll probably just insert him into someone else’s Marvel film at first, like they did with Black Panther. I’m actually looking forward to it. It would be nice to have X-Men with some continuity.
I couldn’t get into it because I couldn’t get past that it wasn’t Perlman.
The man’s 68 years old; do you really expect him to keep playing leads in action films?
Oh, not at all. I just think Perlman was so iconic in the role, and the movies were recent enough, that I just can’t get past that.
It really saddens me that this looks COMPLETELY different in tone from the comics. My biggest complaint with the original films is that, while the characters were all really well-portrayed, the tone was a lot more “superhero action film” and the weird science, neo noir, cosmic horror aspects were all a bit sidelined.
This looks like it’s doubling down in that direction, which is too bad.
Heard a joke once that Ron Perlman was so used to wearing heavy latex, every time he had sex he wore twelve condoms.
Didn’t say it was a funny joke.
I think McShane was a poor casting choice. Too much fight left in him, if you know what I mean.
I’m not at all sure the new guy can pull it off; his delivery is less-than-perfect on nearly every line in the trailer. Plus, he looks like a Glenn Danzig wannabe instead of, ya know, Hellboy (but maybe that’s just me).
Still, it doesn’t look bad; just maybe bad in comparison to the much beloved original. Kinda like Golden Army eh.
Looks like it has some potential.
Like so many other people I really like Ron Perlman’s version, but I’m willing to try someone else’s take on the character.
I was planning to skip this, but then I heard that Lobster Johnson is going to make an appearance. Now I’ll watch it in the theater.
Also, if they can make this as creepy as the animated Hellboy: Blood and Iron, it should be a watchable movie.
I’m getting annoyed by people calling every new adaptation a “reboot”. There were only two previous films, fercryinoutloud. I’m surprised the Sorkin play of Mockingbird isn’t being called a reboot.
That term should be reserved for things that have ran for many years and many installments.
Perlman was not - at least initially- happy about the reboot. Ron Perlman Is Still Upset About Hellboy | Cinemablend
I did a full Hellboy cosplay and met him last fall, and he definitely had an air of “this is a bit of a sore spot”.
What would you call it then? It’s clearly ending one franchise (albeit not a big one) and attempting to start another.
I thought I already said. It’s a new adaptation.
