Well, based off of what was shown, I think Jen was the right choice to go. She seemed to need to the most prompting during the “role playing” bit with Ramsey, and she was the only one who let a “sabotaged” dish go out.
And I don’t know whether to be upset or impressed with last week’s promo for this episode. They included Bonnie’s screaming at Ramsey, which led me to think that she was going to have a major on-screen meltdown. Then it ended up being a training / test exercise. That had to be therapeutic.
I’ve gotta admit, I had a brief moment of “hey, Rock’s a regular guy” when Chef Ramsey turned them around to see his wife and Bonnie’s parents. Rock’s comment of “think they’ll let us have a conjugal” might give some insight into why he was so on edge.
I was suprised that Bonnie stayed, but I knew they couldn’t keep Jen no matter how great she did after she took spag out of the garbage to serve on national TV. You can’t knowingly hire someone to work in your restaurant after seeing them do that, much less RUN the place.
Bonnie isn’t that good looking, but I’d slip her a length.
Who’s mom was hot? I must have missed that one.
Rock looked better this episode than last, but I still don’t like him.
All in all I don’t think anyone in this season really deserves a restaurant of their own.
I like Bonnie and I hope she wins - it sucks to be cute and not taken seriously. I don’t like Rock.
But I think he’ll win.
Jen has got to be -hands down- the UGLIEST cryer I have ever seen. I thought I was being harsh until my husband piped up “They need to stop showing her.”
Bonnie has the best surprised expression. The way her eyes bulge… so cute!
Rock’s wife was very good looking. I can see why one of Rock’s first thoughts was about the conjugal.
None of the moms did it for me. I hope the other poster was not confusing Rock’s mom with Rock’s wife… imagine if Rock had whispered about a conjugal with his mom.
I’m not saying Rock’s ma was hot, it’s just that she had a stately, handsome quality that the other ladies lacked. There was something wistful about her, maybe her eyes, but it brought to mind a healer I knew in the Caribbean who sold sugar cane and bush tea by the side of the road. She was the most beautiful older woman I’d ever seen. Sort of opened my eyes.
It had crossed my mind that this might be at the heart of some of it, but this interpretation is not very charitable and I’d prefer to think there’s some other reason.
But, I mean, one post below yours, she gets slagged on for crying. In this past episode alone, all three contestants cried. Julia has cried. Aaron cried. Only Bonnie gets slagged for it.
The edit means so much here. A few quick cuts showing Bonnie asking Scott what “franks and beans” are, or showing her lying on the couch when they’re supposed to be cleaning the dorms, establish the character the producers want to present. I expect that they knew what kind of cut Bonnie would get when she was cast. Same with Rock. They are watchya call archetypes.
Being the first up on the ‘pass’ was bad luck for Jen. Even though, by now, she should have been expecting sabotage, it’s always going to be toughest to be the first one to see that curve ball. Though in fairness, the mistakes they threw at her (no crab in the pasta) and Rock (no prosciutto with the fish) seemed a lot more obvious than the one they threw at Bonnie (squab not crispy enough).
I agree that Rock looks like a hands-down winner but we’ll see… I picked Melissa for the first few weeks, until she began her physical and mental breakdown (I still wonder if the producers approached her and said “don’t wash or brush your hair this week. It’ll be a good look for you – Oh, and don’t try to cover up that zit on your chin, nobody will notice.”). Referring to Bonnie as “a nanny” at this point seems to me the equivalent of calling Julia “Waffle-House girl.”
I just don’t believe she wants it as much as any of the others. I don’t believe that she would commit herself to a restaurant long term even if she did win.
I’m not crazy about Rock, but I think he would be committed to a restaurant, I think it’s something he’s wanted for a long time. As for Bonnie, I think it’s something she’s wanted only since she heard about this show.
I think you all are a bit too harsh on Bonnie about the “she doesn’t want it” angle.
In the middle of the contest she got into a bad patch, and seemed like she was at the point of throwing in the towel. But she got through that week, and generally got over the hump. For the past few weeks, she’s been the most consistent of the competitors, with few if any obvious screw-ups. A waver of faith in the middle doesn’t mean that hasn’t regained her desire to win the whole thing.
And besides, how much a contestent “wants” to win isn’t really relevant in a skills competiton.
On another point, do you all think that Bonnie is so good looking? I think that Jen was much more attractive than Bonnie, and the pre-meltdown Melissa was the hotter still.
IMHO Jen is NOT in any way better looking than Bonnie. And Jen is downright ugly when she expresses any kind of emotion. However, I do like that during the elimination portions, Jen just looked calmly ahead, ready for whatever might be said. I’m not comfortable with excesses of emotion of any type.
She couldn’t even get excited about winning and express her desire to win when asked about it by Jen in the last episode. The fact that she told her dad “I guess I’m not going to be a teacher” tells me that this isn’t even a dream she’s had for a long time. So it seems that it was not too long ago that she wasn’t even planning on staying in the food industry.
Again, I think she’s a good actress, but I have serious doubts about her long term abilities on her own. I guess we’ll find out who’s right if she wins.
I’m glad it wasn’t just me who felt that way. I kept yelling at the screen “STOP MAKING THAT FUCKING FACE!!!” while we were watching and my wife thought I was crazy.
It is probably the worst cryface I have ever seen.
Bonnie is not a babe, but if you think Jen is better looking that her you need to get your glasses checked out.
I just remembered something. At one point Jen said all the risotto was overcooked and she couldn’t use it. Ramsay asked Scott (?) to check it and he agreed. It looked like they had a couple bins of precooked risotto. So is that how they make the risotto so fast by having a bunch that’s already been cooked about 15 minutes? The stuff in the bins looked white and the risotto they serve is green, so do they save the additional flavoring until last? Who would have been responsible for all the overcooked risotto? Do the contestants still do all the prep at this point? They never showed them prepping.
I think it was pre-cooked rice. When done to the proper point, they can add it to their risotto pan and only have to worry about finishing it off instead of starting risotto from scratch, which would take too long to prepare. Sounds like the rice was cooked past the point of being able to jump start in the risotto again and would end up being mush.
Yeah, but for risotto it would have to be precooked arborio rice and cooked with the risotto method. I just didn’t realize that would work without the risotto turning into a gloopy mess.
