We took a drive out to Mt Pleasant, PA to visit Helltown Brewing, a nice microbrewery whose beer I’ve enjoyed for years. I currently love Pergatory, their double IPA.
While there I had an epiphany of sorts. I always thought the name was a play on All Saints Brewing of Greensburg, just 20 miles down the road. The two breweries have even done a few collaborations (Saints & Sinners for example). But I noticed something that made me realize the name’s origin.
I don’t know about the name origin but I just took a quick peek at their web site. Under the “Our Beers” button you can click on “Year Round”, “Dark as Sin” etc. Then they have a picture of the same amber colored pint for every beer. C’mon, guys you can do better than that!
From Mt. Pleasant’s own page - "The settlement became the center of the rich surrounding farming area. Grain produced on the frontier was usually converted to whiskey for easy transport to the eastern markets. In 1794, during the Whiskey Rebellion, federal troops encamped in the town arresting the local “Whiskey Boys” who protested the new whiskey tax. In this period the settlement earned it’s name “Helltown”.
