Helltown Brewing

We took a drive out to Mt Pleasant, PA to visit Helltown Brewing, a nice microbrewery whose beer I’ve enjoyed for years. I currently love Pergatory, their double IPA.

While there I had an epiphany of sorts. I always thought the name was a play on All Saints Brewing of Greensburg, just 20 miles down the road. The two breweries have even done a few collaborations (Saints & Sinners for example). But I noticed something that made me realize the name’s origin.

Without searching, can anyone guess?

I don’t know about the name origin but I just took a quick peek at their web site. Under the “Our Beers” button you can click on “Year Round”, “Dark as Sin” etc. Then they have a picture of the same amber colored pint for every beer. C’mon, guys you can do better than that!

Are they near that town in PA that’s still on fire? A coal mine IIRC.

I will be talking to the brewers next week and will bring up this issue.

Centralia?
No, but excellent guess!!

Where did Helltown Brewing get their name?

The zip code for Mt Pleasant, PA is 15666!

From Mt. Pleasant’s own page - "The settlement became the center of the rich surrounding farming area. Grain produced on the frontier was usually converted to whiskey for easy transport to the eastern markets. In 1794, during the Whiskey Rebellion, federal troops encamped in the town arresting the local “Whiskey Boys” who protested the new whiskey tax. In this period the settlement earned it’s name “Helltown”.

Huh. I wonder if the brewery owners know about Mt Pleasant’s history (I assume they do)?

I wonder then if they requested the 15666 zip code to play on this history.
