Help! A fool put mounting tape on my ibook display!

(don’t ask… he’s a fool. Tony and his minions have been dispatched to deal with him…)

This BUTTHEAD, for reasons known only to himself, put about 10 1x.5 inch pieces of mounting tape on the display… ASSWIPE… jesus… now, it would come off pretty easily if I didn’t care about scratching the display or soaking it in WD40 or olive oil… but, as you might guess, I’m not ok with any of those things.

So…any tips on how to get it off without too much damage?

Asswipe… god…51 years on this planet and people can still stun me with their idiocy…

Is it bad to put mounting tape on an ibook display?

“Most mounting tape is very hard to peel off”

Goo Gone.

Walmart or Lowes.

Apply sparingly with a paper towel or q-tip. Let set for a few minutes and wipe it off.
Repeat until all glue residue is gone.
Then wipe down with damp cloth per ibook cleaning instructions.

Extract the price of an iBook from teh butthead.

I sent him an email saying “What the hell? What were you thinking???” and I got back total attitude. Wow. People never cease to amaze.

How old is this person? Assuming they are an adult then they are responsible for their actions. Somebody vandalizes something of mine they will by god have it repaired or replaced, as necessary.

What was he trying to mount on your iBook display? Book pages?

If the tape in question is at all porous use something citrus based like this

In my experience these citrus-based cleaners are magic on adhesives and -shouldn’t- damage your screen (ibooks screens are glass like MacBook’s aren’t they?).

Hope this helps, but really, the guy should be paying up if you (or he for that matter) can’t fix it cleanly.

Do you have a space heater or something you can sit it next to? I doubt you’ll leave it there long enough to harm the device and it will probably loosen the adhesive.

Pay, yes - but if he’s dumb enough to do this, he should definitely not be allowed to attempt any fix.

I concur with the idea that raising the temperature to the maximum safe level will make things go better.

Try the Goo Gone, and I don’t mean a different kind, because some other brands make it worse.

Did he happen to explain just WHY he did this?

Before doing this check that the goo gone solvent with not damage any screen coatings. Some LCD screens (like eyeglasses) have anti-glare and other coatings that solvents may damage. You also need to check that his pressing the squares onto the the screen did not damage the LCD layers underneath. LCD screens are very vulnerable to damage from direct pressure on the surface of the screen which can leave permanent discolorations and damage even if the screen still operates.

Heat will destroy the display.

goo gone may work but you will be left with the residue of goo gone which will not come off easily and your unit will be greasy and smelly. I would experiment with a q tip on a square covering an edge that may not be used much by the display.

Personally, unless Captain Amazing is mentally retarded I would hand the unit over to him and ask for a replacement.

In a situation like this, very high alchohol vodka or gin might be worth a try, use q-tips and don’t get excessive.

Definitely!

Nah, just drink straight from the bottle.

Goo Gone will do the job, with ease, and without damage.

And a soapy, damp, cloth will remove any residue. It will smell like Goo Gone for a couple of hours or so but it will pass.

Another vote for Goo Gone, but make sure you get the gel formulation rather than the liquid so it doesn’t run all over the place.

I just used it to take off sticky stuff left on a glass coffee table (from baby-proofing foam) and it worked beautifully. I also used a razor blade scraper like this: http://content.etilize.com/Large/1012683720.jpg but my fingernail worked just as well.

Nice to know about Goo-gone, as I have always just used fingernail polish remover, something I would hesitate to recommend to someone ELSE as who knows what that might or might not do to the screen.

And add me to the pile of people who want to know why the hell anyone would obscure a read-screen with anything, much the less something sticky. That’s just…yah. Can’t come up with any reason for it.

Well, unless they were two…
