Help from Phish fans! (or Snoop fans, or country/western fans)

Using Napster, I came across a cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” purportedly done by Phish. My friend insists that its Phish because, as he puts it, “it sounds like something they’d do”. Several people in the Napster community have also claimed that the version is by Phish. In “Cover Versions We’ve Liked” in Great Debates, Tsar (in his first post) also claims that it is Phish. I don’t think it is. Why?

-Having heard plenty of Phish, it doesn’t sound like them, especially not on vocals. They have brought guests out to jam with them (Santana, Great Country Horns) but usually not to sing. The arrangement of the cover does sound like something they’d do (like their cover of Boston’s “Long Time” on banjo) but I’ve never heard them use a mandolin, which this tune does.

-The Helping Phriendly Book (http://www.phish.net/hpb/) has no listing of this song.

-The same Napster people that claim that it is Phish also claim that it’s live. Sounds like studio to me and it is much cleaner sounding than 99% of the Phish stuff I’ve come across.

I’d love to provide a link directly to the tune but unfortunately the only place I’ve seen it is through Napster. It’s a great cover and I’d really like to know who does the original. Any help?

This link is from Phish.net. They’ve done some really weird covers in the past (“Tub Thumping” and “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It”, just to name two), but apparently this wasn’t one of them. I wonder who it is, though?

It looks like it was done by The Gourds- I looked it up on CDNow after following your link. I entered “juice” into the Phish.net search engine and got no results- I guess its on par with the SDMB search engine.

I did see on Dr. Dre’s Chroniic 2001 album that “Phish” supplied the backing vocals for a song. I wondered about that but this clears it up.
