Help I.D. this baby bird

This baby bird has been swimming around the lake (in Tampa) by itself for a couple of days. As the sketch shows it has a dark brown back that fades to a white belly. The neck is quite long. The sketch is accurate in regards to proportion.

The unusual thing about this bird is that it dives for food. There are no other diving ducks living on this lake. Our resident ducks are Mallards, Wood ducks, and Muscovy ducks, none of which dive.

We do have Anhingas and Cormorants, but this bird seems to have the wrong bill shape for either of those.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

It’s a Pied-billed Grebe, but an adult, not a young one. They are a bit smaller than most ducks, which is why you might think it was young. They dive constantly.

Thanks, Colibri. I just assumed it was a baby because it was fuzzy and seemed to have “cute” proportions, almost like a cartoon duckling.

Young Pied-billed Grebes are more striking than the adults.
