I’ve had Itunes for a while and I have liked it. But today, I try to purchase a song, and up pops a screen saying that I have to upgrade (for FREE!!! ) to a new version. I did not really want to do this. My atitude is “why fix it if it ain’t broke?” But I tried to buy the song several times and EACH time, I was prompted to upgrade.
Finally, I did it. And now my Itunes is gone and I’m having problems with the download of the new version. After the downlaod is almost complete, I get an Internet Security dialouge box saying that Windows has a problem with a file.
“File blocked because it does not have a valid digital signature that verifies it’s publisher”
After saving the ItunesSetup.exe and trying to run it, I get the “data1.cab file corrupted” error.
WTF???
Well, I can’t solve your installation problem but I can tell you who to blame, sort of. Folks discovered that the digital rights managment encoding was being done * after * the download. So it was possible via some various kinds of trickery to get unprotected songs from iTunes. Apple responded by a fix to iTunes and disallowing any older version from downloading songs.
You can get more detail from slashdot.
Eep… I had a lot of problems with cab files and it turned out to be a problem with my RAM. As far as I understand, cab files are bunches of zipped data, so the RAM couldn’t think straight long enough to open them.
A lot of those problems were when I had an iPOD and wanted to install the Apple software. It drove me crazy. I had so many fantasies about repeatedly driving over the iPOD. I had problems installing non-Apple things too.
There is a good RAM-tester here, but it takes a while to run: http://www.memtest86.com/memt32.zip
I sure as hell won’t be upgrading again. But it’s moot if I can’t get THIS version to work.
I just did a system restore from yesterday’s checkpoint. Now I have my old version of Itunes. I will not attempt to upgrade again till Apple works out the bugs. (it wasn’t till I was having problems that I found out that most people are having problems with the upgrade)
