Whatever it takes to get the point across.
I was dragged to a Rod Stewart concert once (c. 1989, Concord amphitheater), and I must say he is the most electrifying performer I’ve ever seen (including Springsteen, Prince, etc.)
Do we pump the semen out of his stomach before or after we shoot him?
Doesn’t anyone else remember that silly rumor from back in the day?
Surprised nobody has used “Forever Young” as an indictment against him or in his defense.
I was going to mention that. It is one of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums. Rod should be shot just for that. OTOH he does have a good voice for blues. If he stuck with that he would probably be one of my favorites.
I used to like “Gladrags and handbags” very much, until one day there was a newsflash on the car radio about Paris Hilton and…I pushed in the RS cassette, and that song started. Now, I can only think about it as PH’s theme song.
If I have to suffer, by Og, I’m taking you all with me!
As it happens, a blogger at Creative Loafing Tampa recently listed Rod as rock’s all-time biggest squandered talent, edging out Elton John, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, and Paul McCartney.
When I look at that list, and I consider that there are plenty of other names I could put on it, a bigger question opens up–what was it about the late 70s and early 80s that caused so many undeniably talented musicians to hit a wall of suck? Was it disco? MTV? Other changes in the business? Or was it just an inevitable trough?
I’ll always have a soft spot for Rod, because my parents were huge fans and I grew up listening to his better stuff. I thought the Unplugged album he did in 1993 was good, as was the show I saw on that tour. But it’s hard to make a case for sparing him out of the last 30 years.
I’ll pay for the ammunition.
