Help me come up with a title for my film idea

Thought I’d waste a lot of time today working on something inconsequential.

I’ve had a movie script idea floating around in my head for many years, and finally got around to writing the basic story down into something resembling a complete plot, but can’t come up with a decent title for it, so I thought you guys might be able to help.

It’s set a long time ago, say 400 years, in somewhere that’s sort of like rural France or Italy or somewhere. An elderly inventor, somewhat of a Da Vinci-level genius but without the same access to resources, formulates a plan to build a flying machine, a glider, that, though he doesn’t know it at first, will turn out to be right and will actually work successfully.

Most of his day-job is helping the local Mayor of the town to engineer projects, or assisting the Surgeon with anatomy, or devising mathematics for the Accountants. A general all-purpose scientist-for-hire, but in the 16th Century. All goes well for many years, but then things start to go wrong, projects fail, causing illness and injury, and he gets blamed, even if it’s not his fault.

Blah blah blah, he gets ostracised, yadda yadda yadda, builds his glider, etc etc etc, saves someone’s life and regains their trust, and so on and so on.

It’s a gentle story, not one with a lot of conflict or excitement, and I picture it as being a very simple tale about a man’s relationship to his neighbours, recognising the difference between a friend and an employer, that kind of thing.

But I can’t come up with a good title. The two major ideas in the story are his poor treatment and increasing distrust, and the building of the glider. I’ve tried to come up with a pithy title involving the words “flight” or “sky” or “wings” and none of them really describe both themes adequately, or at all, so I’m just going round in circles.

The best I have so far are “Dreams of Flight” which is awful, and “Father of Invention” which maybe implies he’s actually Leonardo Da Vinci though he really isn’t. Even though he kind of is.

Any ideas?

Flight of Folly
(His Name)'s Folly
(His Name): A Modern Daedalus
Fly Hard

The Scapegoat’s Wings/Flight of the Scapegoat?

Cool. His name (at the moment) is Gilbert. I like Gilbert’s Folly.

Spoil it for me: Is this in an alternate universe, or else why doesn’t his successful flying machine catch on? And it seems like if he actually achieved flight, using the word “folly” isn’t very cromulent.

You need to add in a car chase, some gunfire, people learning profound life lessons, and a drug cartel. Oh, and sex. You definitely need sex.

Just sayin’. Bob McKee don’t lie.

Stranger

Well it’s not based on real people or real events. I figure in History there have been lots of inventions that worked but don’t catch on, through lack of funds, or cries of witchcraft, or an economic collapse. Sort of like when after the Roman Empire fell, most of Europe went technologically backward and took centuries to get back up to speed.

A fair point worth considering.

At the end of the film he decides he doesn’t like anyone in the town anymore and uses his glider to fly across the sea to a new land.

And when he arrives he’s treated as a god by the natives? :dubious:

That’s when the credits roll. You can make up your own epilogue.

Maybe one of his other engineering projects is building a steeple for the town church. Then you could call it:

A Wing and a Prayer.

Grace and Winged Redemption.

And a giant spider.

Or sequel. I like the idea of fading out on him lounging on a beach with a tropical drink in his hand (coconut cup), fawned over by native girls, and his aircraft set up in the background as a shrine on a pedestal.

[Cue]: Calypso music.

Here’s a good title: Renaissance Man.

That’ll be $10,000.

Denied.

Though what about Vitruvian Man?

If he attaches some fireworks to his glider, you could call it Rocket Man.

Or, in a homage to Bill Shatner, Rock-It Man.

Wings of Doubt

I don’t know about a title, but the theme song should be by R.Kelly…

Air Current Events

I’m more likely to choose Pink Floyd.
