A friend of mine recently got me into listening to Darren Hayes, which was remarkable since the first video she showed me (“Me Myself and (I)”) literally made me recoil from the computer. For the most part, I find it to be pretty enjoyable music. A little more disco-ish than what I might usually listen to, but musically interesting and with engaging lyrics.
…and then there is this song, “The Future Holds a Lion’s Heart.”
Most of this album has science-fiction or steampunk elements to it, so the fact that the song seems to be about some sort of time traveling romance fits, I guess, but other than that I’m lost. Is there a metaphor to it all that I’m missing? The reference to Oscar Wilde and “dare not speak its name” made me think it was about being in the closet, but that doesn’t really fit the rest of this. Nor does the Star Wars reference. Some of it appears to be about vanity, but again, it doesn’t all seem to fit together.
Does anyone else have a clue or is it simply random rhymes set to music?
