A few weeks ago, my mother dropped her favourite vase. Christmas is coming, and I’d like to find her a similar vase to the broken one.
Only problem, is, it’s darn near impossible to find anything even close to it.
So, I’d like to enlist the power of the 'Dope.
What I’m looking for is a glass (or possibly “crystal”… Y’know, the thing that’s almost the same as glass but is much more expensive) vase.
The original was clear, about 14 inches tall and had a base that was about 4 inches across, and was octagonal(? I just looked at some octagonal vases, and I think it had more sides than that. Possibly 10 or more), with flat sides. No flare, no taper, just straight up and down. Think of a cylinder, but instead of a circle at the bottom, it’s an octogon. And it was all one piece, not a bunch glued together. Except for the base, it was also very thin (which is why it’s broken now, and I’m forced to try and remember it)
So I’d like something close to that. Clear, about 14 inches tall, 4 inches diameter, somewhere between 8 to 14 sides, no flare or taper, and all one piece.
So all you people that know of nice decoration sites or stores, please help me.
The original didn’t have the curves out from the base. It was a constant diameter from top to bottom.
Looking at a GIS of iced tea glasses. Yes, like an iced tea glass. Except flat sides. Like this, but with an octagonal base and flat sides… And none of that stuff at the top.
… Whoops.
I guess I should clear up that my mother is indeed, alive. And in this state, she will not fit in to a vase.
Fewer than that many sides. And no flare. Though that is significantly closer than anything I’ve come across yet.
Prices of all these on the other hand… I’m looking to stay around $50. I’ve got the day off today, so I think I’m going to revisit the stores again.
You invite her out to lunch. At lunch tell her you got her out of the house because you’d like to replace her vase. Then go shop for one she likes following your meal.
She gets a lunch and a replacement vase.
You get some quality time with Mom AND you needn’t worry about finding a replica.
Or visit a local flower shop. Tell them the style of vase you are looking for, and see if they have something similar. Have them make an arrangement in it and then you can bring it to your mom, filled.
Nahh, too artsy-fartsy for my taste. Besides, you can’t stuff a big bunch of raggedy black-eyed Susans into the top of one of them things. They’re meant to be an objet and sit there and impress callers with how you had 350 bucks burning a hole in your pocket. [snerk]
Now, my selection is classic, goes with all decor, and will accept up to 2 pounds of randomly chosen, poorly trimmed flower-like objects on stems, even that roadside weed beloved of children picking “flars” for Granny, daisy fleabane.
“Look, Gramma! Tiny daisies!”
“Ooh, how sweet! Thank you!” [curses inwardly as she tries to stuff the weeds into a vase. Can’t do that with yer artsy-fartsy hand-blown one-of-a-kind artistic statement.]
