So I was reading the New Yorker on line and one of the videos interspersed through the text caught my attention (I usually try not to let them disrupt my reading).
I forget the title but I’m pretty sure it had “bus station” in the title and was something like “A bad mistake at the bus station” or “A lie told while waiting for the bus” or something like that.
The animation was lovely but at first had NOTHING to do with a bus station. On a dark night a monkey was cradling her baby and sitting in a stark tree. She plucked a pomegranate and began to eat it. At this point I’m thinking, “hmm…absolutely lovely and intriguing, but what does this have to do with the bus station?”
The scene eventually changed to what looked like it could be the interior of a bus station, but with no people.
At that point I sternly told myself to get back to the article and stop being distracted.
Now I can’t find the video and I really want to watch it! Clicking on the video menu of the New Yorker doesn’t seem to bring up any animated shorts.
Help! I really want to watch this.
Huh, I should have had the sense to Google “monkey pomegranate bus station” BEFORE posting.
Here’s a reference: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/screening-room/a-most-violent-bus-ride
Anyway, I think I might be within the 5 minute window to delete the thread but I won’t, as others may want to watch the video. It’s very cool
Sorry to triple post, but if anyone has made it this far and is intrigued but hasn’t watched the film, I feel like it almost needs a trigger warning. The article I linked to says:
But to resign “Night Bus” to a singular category is an oversimplification, although the film is certainly suspenseful and, yes, very, very funny.
Maybe I missed something, but I didn’t find it funny at all. It was very … artistic … and I think I’m glad I watched it. But it was, um, very violent and gory and dark, to the point where I felt kind of unsettled by the end. Viewer, beware!
So, I finally got around to watching the film. Yeah, that was weird. I did find myself laughing out loud a couple times, mostly because the violence and gore was so over the top that it was just ridiculous, especially when perpetrated by the adorable baby monkey.
Very strange, but I couldn’t stop watching. I love that animation style. Thanks for passing it on!
