The focus of the picture is on two men, I believe that one of them is black but I am not sure. One of them has a flag (a Stars and Stripes I believe) on a flagpole, and he is about to drive the flagpole into the belly of the other man. There is some sort of riot going on around them.
It is etched in my memory because of the horror of it. The expressions on both men’s faces are unforgettable.
What was the circumstance, and where can the picture be found?
He was actually trying to hit him with it rather than spear him, but he swung and missed. By the time the photo was snapped his nose had already been broken.
Y’know, aside from that whole bigotry-is-bad thing, I’d probably be worried about having my name forever associated with trying to beat a black man with a flag, or screaming at little black girls walking to school. Being on the wrong side of history to an acute degree.
It’s never stopped the kind of people in question before, no matter how far back in history you go. That’s because to that kind of people, they are NOT on the wrong side of history, but seriously believe their opponents are. Only time and the overwhelming disgust of society can make that rock-solid belief in their own righteousness fade away.
Those people thought that they were right, though. They thought that the person recieving the beating or verbal abuse was ‘on the wrong side of history’. In other words, they were ‘a bit confused’.
