I want to be banned from the SDMB. I am dead serious. I have some very good personal reasons for this. The problem is that I don’t like calling people with racial slurs and I don’t really have the patience to keep opening up stupid threads (except for this one) until the Mods get tired of me. Nor do I believe in wishing death or pain on anyone. Why do I have to be such a nice guy?
So what can I do to get banned? Help me.

In all seriousness, this might be someone else using this guy’s computer. I’d suggest that be taken into consideration before the mods commit to the obvious course of action here.
He/She has probably burnt ALOT of time lurking and responding on this board, and things are going to hell at the home/office. Maybe this thread is the self-realization that a banning would help on the road to recovery to get back the time lost on this board…

It is truly me - Humpty himself asking for the banning. No I’m not your run of the mill SDMB nutjob, but nevertheless I do wish this upon myself. It is not in reaction to any thread or any poster or any issue discussed here. I actually like the SDMB and almost everyone here very much and in case I am successful I wish everyone the best.
I know that this seems really fucked up and in some ways it is. I have been wanting this for a couple of weeks now. I am a very private and sensative person so I can’t go into all the details but the gist of it is that my work is suffering because of my reaction to this board. In the past I have sold my TV, given away my AM/FM radio, and cut-off my phone service for this same reason. I have considered cutting off my internet access but I often genuinely need it for my work and the library is closed over night (when I work the most).
If you’re serious, write to an administrator or two (because we’re not always at our computers, really! Sometimes we take vacations) and ask to have your posting privileges removed or suspended. We can do that.
Wait, I know! Sign up and pay for another account, then announce it by posting under the new name in this thread. You get your wish, the Reader gets another $5, the audience gets to stop listening to you . . . everybody wins!

That’d make the user database bigger and possibly stress the hamsters; and what if somebody comes along wanting to sign up with hamhole’s second moniker? They’d be made sad when they found they couldn’t use their name of choice. A more equitable and lucrative solution would be just to charge $10 for a moderator assisted suicide. For $15, the banee might receive a choice of custom epitaphs etc.
Aside from that, the only comments that it seems honourable to add in a thread like this are to wish you luck and success working out whatever problems you’re having.

You will not be unable to reach the SDMB from that computer.
Techie explaination: The hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. 127.0.0.1 considered to be your computer. In other words, when you type boards.straightdope.com into your browser, your browser will try to look for the webpage ON YOUR COMPUTER. It won’t find it (obviously), and you’ll get the famous 404 File Not Found page displayed.
Easier then a banning, and completely reversable if you should ever want to return.
Also, this is an easy way to rid yourself of a lot of web advertisements. add the servers they originate from to your hosts file under 127.0.0.1
