I have a pretty distinct memory of seeing this as a kid (probably early 80s). In the scene, a group of people are hiding (probably from Nazis). A baby starts crying. One of the men (I think?) takes the baby to “comfort” it. When the danger has passed, it is revealed he has smothered the baby to save the group.
An exhaustive Google search has revealed only confusion and contradiction. Help me, SDMB! You’re my only hope!
IIRC, in the Hawkeye’s flashback it’s a chicken that is making noise, and the woman who quieted it did so by smothering it. But it’s later revealed that it was actually a baby and the mother killed her own baby to save everyone on the bus.
If the film had Rosanna Arquette in it, it may have been a made for television movie, The Wall (1982).The Wall (TV Movie 1982) - IMDb The baby was smothered while under the sewers of Warsaw when they finally escaped.
Jeez, this is practically a TV trope. I didn’t know this was so common. I’m pretty sure it was a Holocaust film or miniseries. You guys are (as always) super helpful!
That scene in The Secret Invasion really made an impression upon my sister and me when we were younger. Whenever we’d catch Henry Silva in another role later (and he was quite prolific) we’d exclaim “It’s Babykiller”!
There was a time I would often reference this scene in my…humor (because anne frank jokes are hilarious!:p)…but everyone kept telling me I was confusing the scene with something non anne frank related. I’m glad I wasn’t and it was they who were stupid, and not just my jokes.
