Help me identify an artist and painting, please ...

I’m looking for the artist and title of a painting. Simple enough, eh? Now, here’s where I throw a wrench in the works. The work in question was published along side William Cullen Bryant’s Thanatopsis in an English Literature textbook I had back in high school. I also seem to remember seeing in again (with Thanatopsis) in a textbook early in college. IIRC, it was a landscape piece with, I believe, a gorge with a man standing at an overlook of some sort. My memory is quite vague on the details. At any rate, I haven’t been able to find it since. I don’t have either text, and I don’t remember the titles, so I don’t have a place to start. I am here asking for the generous help of fellow Dopers. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Current students, does your English Lit book have a painting/illustration with Thanatopsis? Former students, if you still have your textbooks, can you help? Teachers? Professors? Anyone?

It wasn’t this, was it?

Thanatopsis

PS: It might help to indicate when you were in high school/college.

ShibbOleth, that is VERY close to what I am remembering! In fact, that may be it. Asher B. Durand’s name sounds very familiar in this context. Thanks!

I graduated HS in 1990, and I think I had that class my junior year, which would be 1988-89. I probably saw it in college just a couple of years later.

If it isn’t the piece linked above, it might be this one: Caspar David Friedrich, The Pilgrim above Mist, 1818.

From the same site:
Kindred Spirits is IT! Mystery solved!

Thanks for the link, ShibbOleth!

Might it have been this Durand?

I hope it’s this one, though, because that’s teh one I thought of.

Damn it, 11 minutes too late. At least I have the consolation of having guessed correctly.
