Help me learn to dance

I can do the techno thing (clear out of the way though!).

I can do the goth/stompy thing (the secret, dance like a girl!) If forced, several years of kickboxing have sharpened my dancing skillz will let me outdance any other goth tai chi master (what’s up with that?).

The jerks who were in high school have put me off of breakdancing (although Skinny Puppy’s video for Pro-Test has got me started on kip ups).

Krumping sounds interesting, but I couldn’t make it to the movie.

Several years of kickboxing have taught me that I’m too clumsy to dance with a partner, no matter how fleet-footed she may be.

Parkour (aka freestyle walking) is just plain scary.

So, in the interest of a) looking ridiculous but not stupid, b) impressing the ladies and c) minimizing danger to others, I’m left with whatever style of dance the Robot belongs to. I’ve got some half-remembered moves from Electric Bugaloo, but where can I get some insight on how to sharpen my skillz before trying this in public?

I suppose I could start a vlog with my journey from white guy to…white guy with some moves. I’d be the next Star Wars Kid.

Help me learn to post in the correct forum.

Crap, this should probably be in Cafe Society. Could someone flag down a Mod? Thanks.

Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.

I lived with a guy who won a waterbed in a dance contest. He said the key is to know a couple of “moves,” and then figure out how to fill in between them with non-specific movement that doesn’t look too stupid. That doesn’t help much to be sure, but it does take a lot of pressure off if you can get used to grooving with the beat because all that’s left is learning a couple of popular whatsits.

The local community college here offers a hip-hop dance class in its continuing education program. Something like that might help.

All told, the key is having fun and not caring what others think about your dancing. People like that always dance well whether they look goofy or not. IMHO, of course.

Interesting. In my area there are distinctly different guy/girl goth dances. The girls try to stomp seductively, and the guys do a combination swatting flies/bouncy thing. That’s a loose characterization of a lots of very disparate dance styles, though.

It sounds to me like you can already dance. Unless you’re talking a specific dance type, like swing or line dancing or whatever, it’s all just wriggling.

In my experience, it’s not so much what you do as it is the attitude you exude while doing it. That’s 90% of it.
