Are there any easy and non-humiliating ways to learn how to dance in a dance club setting? It seems to be an essential social skill around here, kinda like chewing with your mouth closed. My goals are modest: I just want to blend in at danceclubs without looking too much like a buffoon. I am quite flexible and athletic, so stamina should be no problem.
You could rent an instructional DVD or video. Or rent a recent movie with a lot of club scenes and copy the moves of the people on the screen. (The only one that comes to mind right now is ‘Save the Last Dance,’ but I know there are more.)
Get some club music and practice at home in front of the mirror. If you have a friend who is a good/decent dancer, ask him or her to give you some instruction.
Good luck!
Take dancing lessons. Any type of dancing, although there are some places that offer things like “Hip Hop” and "Contemporary"courses. I really can barely dance at all, in ANY setting, but my SO and I took a series of ballroom dancing classes last winter and it’s amazing that, while I still can’t dance, I do “get it” more and move a bit more naturally. I’d like to take more lessons, but time and money just haven’t allowed it since. Grab another friend who you know can’t dance, or one willing to help out or at least pay to go to classes with you, and go dance! It’s a good workout, and actually a fun way to meet people.
Drink.
Heavily.
Eve , While your solution is both simple and elegant, It has left me with much regret and bitterness the next morning.
I probably won’t be committed enough to take dance lessons, although i won’t rule it out either, but the video thing does sound viable. Could i perhaps “dance along” to pupolar music videos on television?
How about a classified ad?
