I second Benefiber. No taste, no grit, and you can add it to anything (I add it to my glass of milk). It works, oh boy does it work.
I had to drink some once the night before a surgery. It tastes like a really lemony Sprite. Not bad at all.
Here’s the recipe from the 100% Bran box.
LOW FAT BRAN MUFFINS
1 c flour
1½ t baking powder
½ t soda
½ t cinnamon
2 c 100% Bran (I prefer Raisin Bran)
1¼ c 2%, low fat milk
½ c firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
½ c applesauce
1 c broken pecan (optional)
Heat oven to 400º. In one bowl; mix flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon.
In another large bowl: Mix cereal, milk and sugar in a bowl and let stand 5 minutes. Then Stir in egg and applesauce. Add flour mixture and stir just until moistened. (Batter will be lumpy.)
Spoon batter into muffin pan sprayed with no stick cooking spray, filling each cup 2/3 full.
Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm. Can be frozen, and taken out as needed and microwaved.
Your friend ever try flax meal? That stuff is way healthy, has no bad taste, and is fairly cheap.
I love to put it on cottage cheese or in yogurt, or in a smoothie. Or in scrambled eggs. It’s got 2 or 3 different essential fatty acids and of course is fibery. You might have to experiment with how you bake with it, just because it’s got more fat than bran. I wouldn’t substitute it 1:1 with bran flakes or anything - maybe just add a few tablespoons to a recipe.
Also recommended in various places is psyllium husks. Although I think i am spelling it wrong.
Nothing wrong with the taste but a couple of hours later you could put out a large fire with your behind. Too much flow with the go for me.
Ironic that the subject of this thread came up – right now I’m trying different high-fiber recipes to prevent my mother from having a bowel obstruction (common among elderly folk, btw). Kiz Mom doesn’t like drinking water, but she loves sweets, so I figure if I can sneak in bran or oatmeal or something fibrous into, say, a brownie, all the better.
I found this recipe in my travels. I’m going to make them tomorrow. It got a lot of great reviews:
OATMEAL BREAKFAST COOKIES
* 2 cups brown sugar
* 2 1/2 cups rolled oats
* 4 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 tablespoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
* 1/4 cup canola oil
* 1/2 cup prune puree (baby food works wonderfully in recipes like this)
* 2 tablespoons water
* 5 egg whites or the equivalent in Egg Beaters or Just Whites
* 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 3/4 cup raisins
* 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
* 1/3 cup chopped dried apricots
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, stir together the oats, flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Make a well in the center and pour in the canola oil, prune puree, water, egg whites and vanilla. Mix until well blended. Stir in the raisins, walnuts and apricots. Scoop cookies using an ice cream scoop, or roll into golf ball sized balls. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets and flatten to 1/2 tall with wet hands. These cookies do not flatten very much while baking.
- In the preheated oven, bake 8 minutes for chewy cookies 10 to 12 minutes for dry cookies. Cookies will not get crisp. Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.
You can use a bag of Sunmaid Fruit Bits for the raisins and apricots. Or you could omit the fruit altogether and substitute chocolate chips
POWER PUDDING
1 1/2 c. pitted prunes
1 c. unsweetened applesauce
1/2 c. All-Bran
3/4 c. prune juice
Put in blender. Blend well. Refrigerate. Use 1/4 cup daily oral, followed by glass of tap water oral.
From a recipe given out at a local pharmacy.
What about eating something spicy? I find that spicy, peppery food tends to go right through me in a matter of hours. Jalapeno cornbread muffins are AWESOME, spicy, and full of Vitamin C.
Bah! Pikers! Using All-Bran and the like. Here’s a pipe-cleaning bran muffin recipe my wife makes (handed down from her grandmother.) They’ll make you shit out your eyeballs. This sumbitch makes a huge recipe - enough for many dozens. However, the batter keeps for months in the fridge. Feel free to scale the recipe down for your needs.
I tell ya, though. One of these guys in the morning will keep you regular, to say the least.
Grandma Gerald’s Bran Muffins
6 (!) cups wheat bran (nuttin’ else. Just pure wheat bran)
2 cups boiling water
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup oil
4 eggs
5 cups flour
5 t baking soda
1 1/2 t salt
1 quart buttermilk
1/2 pound raisins or golden raisins (yum!) or dates or nuts (or hell, all 4)
Pour 2 cups of boiling water over 6 cups of bran. Let cool. Cream sugar and oil. Add eggs one at a time and beat well. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Add bran and raisins (dates, etc.). Let stand in refrigerator at least 12 hours before baking. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until firm.
Believe me, folks. Your intestines will thank you. Frequently.
What we need is some Super Colon Blow.
I once ate a couple spoonfuls of wheat germ mixed in yogurt for breakfast 3 days in a row. I had to stop doing that because it got things moving too much. Yogurt by itself doesn’t do that to me so I blamed the wheat germ.
Applesauce has fiber and is often used in muffin recipes, like one posted above, as a replacement for fat.
I think I made some muffins from a recipe book a while ago that got things moving, too, I’ll have to see if I can remember which recipe book and recipe it was. I have a lot of them so this could take a while.
I got an image of a priest splashing holy water over a man on a toilet, shouting, “The power of muffins compels you!”
Yep, I’m a strange one, all right.
::Sssnnnnaps on a latex glove::
My mom used to make these muffins when I was a kid. I think the name says it all.
Huffin’ Puffin’ Muffins

1 ½ cups mashed bananas (3 medium)
¼ cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
1 ½ cups flour
½ cup wheat germ
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
¼ tsp salt
Heat oven to 375º F. Paper 18 muffin cups.
Beat butter and brown sugar in large bowl until fluffy. Add bananas, milk, vanilla, and eggs. Blend well.
Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Stir in flour, wheat germ, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Blend just until dry particles are moistened.
Fill cups 2/3 full; place on cookie sheet. Bake 20-25 minutes until toothpick inserted in muffin comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes and remove from cups.
What about chunks of dried papaya? Papaya is a great laxative.
WARNING: May cause rectal distension.
Sometimes the user name and thread subject just work so beautifully.
Wow… and I’m inclined to believe it, considering your past posts!
Here you go.
I’m disturbed that they felt they needed to specify the way it is meant to be taken.
Or was that just you being thorough?
