As some of you might be aware, May 21st - this coming Saturday - has been declared Judgement Day, the end of the world, by some of the more true believers (and less rational thinkers.)
I hope you have all made your peace with the Lord!
And since, nothing you do in your daily life will matter after Saturday, why not help me put together a playlist of “end of the world” songs to celebrate the upcoming event?
Obviously It’s the End of the World As We Know It by REM is first song on the list. What else should I include?
And do hurry up with your suggestions, folks. I am working under a deadline here!
Camouflage - The Great Commandment
The Hives - Tick Tick Boom
Men Without Hats - Pop Goes the World
Midnight Oil - Dreamworld
Nickelback - Burn It To The Ground
R.E.M - Fall On Me
Social Distortion - Ring Of Fire (or the Johnny Cash version)
“Waiting for the End of the World” by Elvis Costello
“Ever Since the World Ended” by Mose Allison
“It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” by Dylan
“The End of the World” by Skeeter Davis
“Time is Tight” by Booker T. & the M.G.'s
“King of the World”, by Steely Dan, is sort of a general post-apocalypse song. (“If I stay inside/I might live till Saturday…”)
“Nostradamus”, by Al Stewart, is about the titular loony’s predictions of the End Times, but it might be a bit non-obvious.
There must be a lot of gospel songs and spirituals that deal with the Judgment Day. Speaking of which – “Get Happy”; I’d probably go with the Ella Fitzgerald version.
A few tunes that aren’t really about the end of the world but have appropriate titles:
Out of Time (Rolling Stones)
No Time (Guess Who)
It Ends Tonight (All American Rejects)
And maybe you could finish your set with a tune from Porgy & Bess:
[nitpick]Technically isn’t this just the Rapture, not Judgement Day? The two terms are not synonymous. If the nutballs can’t even keep that straight…[/nitpick]
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
R.E.M. - It’s The End of the World as we Know it.
Bob Dylan - Gotta Serve Somebody
1999…I mean 2011 remix by Prince.
I was psychotic as I spoke this, forgive me if I go astray
But when I woke this morning, it was the 20th of May…
They say Two Thousand Eleven party over, but it’s ok.
Cuz tonight I’m gonna party like tomorrow’s Judgement Day
P.S. See you all Monday Morning…Harold Camping…LOSING…
