Dubh (Gaelic for black I think)
Sam. I feel very strongly that black Labs should be named Sam. My parents didn’t go for it when they got a (mostly) black Lab, though.
Other suggestions:
Fenris
Ragnar
Loki
Damien
Hades
Midnight
Jet
Pepper
My sister had a black lab cross with a patch of white on his ears - called him Guinness.
I’m currently saving for an Irish Wolfhound pup, which I believe my geek roots are going to oblige me to name either Bran or Sceolaun. This is, of course, subject to change, but they’re still kinda cool names.
Plenty of great pet names from mythology, though - a friend named his dogs Geri and Freki after Odin’s wolves. He also had a budgie named Huginn. We worried about him.
BigNik Bran? From a book I read (set in 12th century Wales & England) Bran meant dark colored in Welsh. It was the nickname of Simon DeMonfort’s black-haired son- his welsh nanny called him that, and no one called him Simon jr from then on.
Anyway I like Chase as a name for a puppy.
Bran and Sceolaun were the name of Fionn MacCumhail’s (Finn MacCool’s) hounds. Without getting too far into the myth, I have been told by someone who has a reputation for knowing this sort of thing (and that’s as much of a cite as you’re getting) that family myth says that the Brannaghs are descended from that dog.
I will, however, refer you to Goats’ take on the subject.
I like Stinky or Chicken.
I’d also point out that a survey from late last century revealed that Australia’s most popular dog’s name was, in fact, “Dog”.
Then again, a survey quoted in a year-2000 Good Weekend magazine also stated that the country’s most popular funereal dirge was Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”…
Okay, I waited until now, and he made his name known to me.
I hope you are not disappointed, his name is Ripley.
He is so cute.
Pooped outside twice today
Ripley is cute!
I was going to suggest Otis. I really liked the Cosmo suggestion too.
Also, 2-syllable names are the most recognizable to dogs, so they learn to recognize their names more quickly. Ripley’s perfect in that regard.
Mickey, Baxter, Harry, Joey, Kohl, Ebony…Hey Dog! Come Here
Ahhh, the days of potty training. When my family moved in to our current house, we also got a dachshund which we named Wiggles. Wiggles absolutely loved the carpets around the house and had made a number of stains in the first few months it took to get her fully potty trained. Fortunately, Wiggles was much better by the time we had finished remodeling our house, which included getting new carpets.
Suggestion, stock up on club-soda for those in-house accidents.
I also like the name Buttons.
A buddy of mine named his dog Dioji. It’s pronounced “dee OH jee.” Just like the way you pronounce the letters D-O-G… (get it? Hee hee…)
I like Billy
