I’ve mentioned recently that my makeup kit got mixed up with the rest of the studio gear when my friend closed his studio and moved away. I especially liked my Ben Nye cake makeup in the disc-shaped containers. In L.A. I could just go buy some. Now, years later and 1,200 miles away, I don’t have that option. An additional problem is that I’m a camera guy, not a makeup guy. I know what I want when I see it, but it’s more difficult to tell what things are online.
One of the cakes was ‘Clown White’. As I said, it was in a disc-shaped container. The container was about three inches in diameter, and about ¾ inch tall. It was applied by dampening an applicator sponge and dabbing it into the cake. I found this page. Is that the right stuff?
I’d also like to find the Cadaver Grey cake and the Corpse Blue paint.
You and everyone else, buddy.
Ben Nye redid their colors a while ago, and did away with their corpse blue and cadaver grey, replacing them with standard-issue “grey” and “blue grey” which aren’t QUITE the same. For a while, the ‘death blue-grey’ in the ‘death wheel’ palette wasn’t too bad, but it’s gone assy recently also (goddamn them). I’ve liked their new “misty violet” but not enough to make me forgive them for axing corpse blue.
Your best bet is with the fxsupply.com company online: look at their ben nye page and check out the halloween kits (the ghoul kit is nice), the clown supply category, and the creme color collections for individual pots.
If it were me (and despite my language, I do very much like their creme pots for effects colors, despite being a Mehron girl at heart) I’d get creme pots individually, and see how the misty violet, blue grey, and grey do you, and if they can’t be blended to what you need, then check out the ‘death wheel’ and the ‘wound wheel’ and just be aware that your quantities will be much more limited.
ETA that I’ve only had the bare minimum of experience with cake instead of creme formulas, but that I’ve found their colors consistently true across types when I’m playing around at trade shows.
Eta after the five-minute mark, fxsupply does actually have the old “monster wheel” with “blue spirit” and “cadaver grey” but that appears to be the ONLY way you can get those two colors any more. It also has the misty violet, so it’s an all-around excellent color wheel - if you like and use those colors, I’d order several. I might have just bought one for myself - my pots have been ekeing out their last dregs for a year or so now.
Good luck!
