Help me recall two films (or shows, or whatever)?

I’m thinking of two films (or whatever) I saw when I was in school, some time in the early 90’s. One was about a black model taking photographs on the beach with this white guy, and she’s suddenly transported through time to the era of slavery, she’s on a slave ship, she works on a plantation, I think the master likes her, she’s beaten a lot, a lot of stuff happens and she somehow ends up back in the present, and she looks coldly at the white photographer and walks away. I don’t remember how long it was (seemed like movie length), but I think there was nudity.
The other was some kind of grouping of different skits, and I think it might have been called “the colored museum” or something like that. I only remember one of the skits, of a black woman with two heads, each wearing a wig. I think one was an afro or naturally styled and one was maybe flatironed, and the woman argued with the heads until she snapped and ripped off her own wig.
The two may or may not be related to each other; I saw them around the same time, possibly for educational purposes. If any of you guys knows what I’m talking about, a real title or link or something would be greatly appreciated! Every once in a while the pondering sneaks back up on me and keeps me awake at night. :frowning:

I can’t help with an answer but really dig your screen name. As I’m sure you know, TCM showed you the other evening- awesome! I wish they had shown your brother Nazarin as well.

Don’t know about the second one, but your first film sounds like Sankofa, directed by Ethiopian-born Haile Gerima, who moved to the US in the late 1960s and went to UCLA’s film school. He is now on the faculty at Howard University in DC.

Wee Bairn: Why, thank you!
and mhendo: I think that must be the first one, indeed! Oh, you’ve saved me from hours of despair and puzzlement. Thanks so much! bows now I just need to get my hands on it so I can purge my retroactive curiosity for good.

As for the second one, I should probably clarify that the woman didn’t have two heads, she was sitting at a vanity or something with two wig stands, played by other actresses under the table.
Anyone?

Argh. I was so sure I’d gotten the name wrong that I never bothered to search “The Colored Museum.” :smack: Well, that’s indeed its name and I’ve found it. I guess I watched some televised version. sigh

Well, as long as I’m on a roll, how about this one? I think it was a japanese yakuza film, but it struck me as very Americanized. I don’t remember if they were speaking English but it’s highly possible. There was a lot of nudity and violence, even though I saw it on tv, so maybe it was some special late night movie. There was one scene I particularly remember where a bunch of gangsters eat sushi off of a naked woman. I saw it when I was young, so it may have been in the eighties or early nineties at latest.

I’m no good with links, but a search of Sankofa DVD on Ebay shows two copies availble at buy it now prices of 9.43 & 25.00.

The process is called Nyataimori- Showdown in Little Tokyo, released in 1991, has such a scene. Never heard of it until today, and it looks to be a fairly common thing. Who knew?

I knew about the process but it didn’t occur to me that it had a name. :o Good to know, I suppose!
I’ll definitely check out that movie and see if that’s it, though. You’re awesome to help out like that.

Sounds like Showdown in Little Tokyo to me too, and the timeframe would be just right. You can usually find it on DVD for $6 or so, and it isn’t horrible as far as early '90s action movies go – it starred the late, great Brandon Lee alongside Dolph Lundgren and the lovely Tia Carrere.

Funny how I didn’t remember any particular faces from that movie at all, not even close, but at the mention of Brandon Lee I do think I recall his face. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry I didn’t notice sooner, but thanks!

A movie involving eating sushi off of naked women and you can’t remember the faces. Imagine my surprise. Now, 'scuze me while I run off to Netflix.
