Help me remember: US Jewish Protesters Preparing for Street Fight

I have a vague memory as a child of a story on TV in which I believe that Jewish counter protesters in the US were going to go head to head with either Nazis, KKK guys, cops, or some other group that was trying to antagonize them. These protesters were gearing up with football helmets and bats saying that they wanted to confront their tormentors. I don’t recall if the fight ever went down. It was sometime in the 70’s. Does anyone remember anything like this, do I got it all wrong, or did I dream the whole thing?

You might be thinking of the Neo-Nazi march in Skokie, Ill, a town with many Holocaust survivors. These were the inspiration for the Illinois Nazis in Blues Brothers.

Are you referring to what happened in Skokie, Illinois in 1977?

I hate Illinois Nazis. I remember Skokie, but I couldn’t find documentation of anyone who tried to physically confront them.

I believe I must of saw a report on the Jewish Defense League. They were pretty busy in the 70’s, beating up Nazis with bats and pipes when they got the chance (among other things). Here is a list of their activities according to the Anti-Defamation League: http://www.adl.org/extremism/jdl_chron.asp
