Help me run away as well!

I believe it wasn’t long before I signed up, and I know this was done, but for someone else. heh. I want to feel special. Actually, I’m just looking for some discussion…

I live in Ohio. Lately, the post-college plans have come up and I’ve mentioned grad school, working with my degree (teaching school) or exploring. I often think about moving far away, and it sounds great. So here is your chance, Dopers! Sell me on your country!

Here’s what I figure:
Moderate temperatures are good…we’re in Ohio and it’s not too bad. Considered Canada and climate is similar, what about England? or Montana?

I enjoy suburb area’s/small towns. Country is wonderful. Obviously, downtown Toronto or Paris is a great plan for a vacation, but not for more than a weekend (sorry cities)…

I’m not sure if I would want to leave the USA, but if I did, how hard would it be to get into another country permanently. I imagine it will be when we are both finished with school (at least for the time), therefore I will either have a BA in English Education or a MA in something* and gf will have at least Masters in Criminology, possibly PhD in forensic psych…
I know that being well-qualified in certain fields can help get you jobs in another country…but that’s the extent of my knowledge

*not quite sure if I’m thinking linguistics or not…so I guess we’ll see on that part

also, sorry that I reference Canada a lot. Of course, the idea is that I’m just getting ideas, and Canada is something that is somewhat familiar, being our friendly neighbor and all…

Ireland. Temperatures moderate although it does rain a lot. Lots of country, lots of potato farms, not many cities. I imagine it would be quite easy to get into the north as it is part of the UK, then I guess you could meander off into the republic from there. Plus I recall you mentioning that you liked guinness. Perfect.

Of course, the question is, is guinness as expensive there as it is here? 8 something a 6-pack, compared to 5.45 for bud light (ugh)…and do people look at vespa’s funny?

Brendon

tCoE, have you ever had American Guinness? I swear they ship the rejects over here. brendon_small, the Chicken knows of what s/he speaks. The beer in Ireland… where’s the “shivering in ecstasy” smiley? Guinness & Smithwicks/Kilkenny (not at the same time), somewhere between Dublin and Cobh Smithwicks seemed to turn into Kilkenny, but that’s ok. So green…

“Maybe someday I’ll go back again to Ireland,
If my dear old wife would only pass away.
She nearly has my heart broke with her naggin’
She’s got a mouth as big as Galway bay.”
I’m sorry, what was the question?

Ireland was green, not the beer!

So while we’re on the Ireland topic…
how’s the music scene there? or even in the UK at all?
I ask because I’m a solo-acoustic singer-songwriter type guy and I hate to stop playing out just because I’m in a different country

It’s sad if the Guiness here is the reject…it’s still some of the best around…
If I could just get Yeungling in Ohio (I am so jealous of PA)

Guinness is the same price as lager here. Which I suppose would be fairly expensive to an american. But Bob is right, I have had english Guinness and they just export all the shit that went a bit wrong. Not sure about vespa’s, don’t ever recall seeing one.
I am female by the way.

The music scene is good, plenty of proper old school pubs who get acoustic or traditional Irish bands. Also plenty of dirty rock bars, at least in Belfast. Depends what you are into.

So, good beer and good music…

what about finding a house? I am kind of wandering through international real estate sites right now…any suggestions for ireland?
