I’m holding down two jobs and going into full-time classes next week. I’ve been working non-stop through the summer and winter breaks ever since I got to university two years ago. I need a break.
So help me run away from home for a few days (a week at most). What should I do?
Disclaimer: I am not actually planning to run away from home. But it’s very fun to imagine.
Do you have a car and a little cash? Random road trip. Pick someplace you can drive to within a couple of days, get there, camp out, and drive home. Glacier/ Waterton Park? Disneyworld? Thunder Bay?
Or you could do what I did one time when I went outside to move my mother’s car and, three hours later, found myself on the far side of Algonquin Park…
Proof that my mind is overtaxed. My first thought after reading this was to suggest that Kythereia buy a fake beard and join the circus as a bearded lady. The rationale: It would be cool to list bearded lady on your resume.
God, I need sleep.
But first I need to finish my thermodynamics homework. Grumble mutter grumble.
skip school… just… instead of taking the bus to school, take it to the train station. and buy a ticket to… oh… New York City. And when you get to NYC, cut your hair and maybe dye it. Wear makeup. Just be someone different.
Hang out in New York for a while. Find a shelter or hook up with some guy or whatever… just absorb the city. Be anonymous- nobody expects anything of you if they don’t know you. Nobody worries about you or cares what you do. Total freedom.
When you get tired of New York, stow away on a plane or ship to Europe. Hook up with a stray dog. After all, you’ll probably be a little lonely at this point. Take the dog with you and just walk all over the whole continent.
oops. I forgot all about the week at most and delved into my own fantasy land.
get a bike and just… ride. for a week. See where you end up. Let yourself get totally lost.
I was in your city this past weekend and was fortunate to be shepperded about by someone in the know.
Though it drizzled rain the whole time, we visited the most wonderful shops, containing so many beautiful and striking things as to take your breath away. We stopped several times to have tea or chocolates in charming cafes. We were at Queen St, it was a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon.
The following day we spent in the Distillery district. Magnificent old buildings, repurposed magnificently, jam packed with artists studios and art galleries. I saw so very many beautiful things I began to swoon. I’m still high from the experience several days later.
Were I you, I would give myself permission to fall in love with the great place you are. Take a couple of days, go to the ROM, the AGO, the Allen gardens. Spend some leisurely time, soaking up the beauty that’s all around you.
When I ran away from home I went to Canada. I found a little town in Alberta that reminded me of the 50s in the US and camped there for two weeks. OK, I camped at the Super 8. But I got my mind straight and it was the coolest part of my mid-life crisis.
