Help me understand Battlestar Gallactica

The wife and I are trying to get into this since Stargate Atlantis is between seasons, and I’ve heard so much great stuff about it I figured it was worth a shot.

I recorded the 1-hour “catch up” that came on last Tuesday and we watched that, but I can’t blame them for not being able to sufficiently sum up 2 seasons in 1-hour minus commercials. The wife is hooked already - which is weird because I’m the geek, not her - but I’m frakkin’ well gods-damn lost.

So, anything to catch me up will help, and I have some specific questions, too:

  1. Was Boomer ever human?
  2. Who is the lady who was running at the end of the season premier, and what is her story? Did she replace the woman who plays Joe on Eureka? If not, where is she?
  3. Have the Iraq-war metaphors been so strong throughout the whole series? Should they be expected to continue?

I guess those are all the questions I can think of right now. I read the first page of the other BSG thread but I didn’t want to hi-jack it so I thought I’d start a separate one.

I think we can assume that there’re going to be spoilers in a thread like this, so I’m not tagging them. If it becomes an issue, a mod is welcome to either spoiler tag my stuff or change the thread title as necessary.

  1. She thought she was human, every non-Cylon thought she was human, and she was treated like a human, until the Season 1 finale (well, Baltar finds out an episode or two earlier). We (the viewers) learn she’s a Cylon at the end of the miniseries-pilot-movie thing, so basically we’ve known all along.

  2. I assume you mean the one that is freed by the policeman and runs off into the canyon? That is Callie. Through the first two seasons, she was a mechanic on the deck of the Galactica; after the one-year-fast-forward in the last episode of Season 2, we learn that she is married to Chief Galen Tyrol and pregnant with his child. The child is born during the four-and-change months between Seasons 2 and 3.

  3. To the first part, not really, no. There are some that will argue that, even now, they’re not specifically Iraq-war-metaphors but rather a philosophical/moral exploration of war and resistance in general; I’m not sure how much I believe that given how some (not all, but many) of the parallels match up. There’s no reason to expect them to continue indefinitely, but I think we’ll be seeing them for a little while longer just because of the situation that the humans are in.

  1. Was Boomer ever human? - No*, but she thought she was.

2a. Who is the lady who was running at the end of the season premier, and what is her story? That’s Cally. You touch her and I’ll cut you! She’s mine!!! Ahem, she started as a bit part but fans hollered loud enough that Ron wrote more and more parts for her (someday find the ear-biting scene!). Well, we might not have directly caused her to get more parts, but we like to think we did.
b. Did she replace the woman who plays Joe on Eureka? You mean Erica Cerra as Maya? She’s not played a big part in the series.

3a. Have the Iraq-war metaphors been so strong throughout the whole series? Not really.
b. Should they be expected to continue? I dunno, probably. They seem to enjoy sneaking in relevent storylines.

On preview, what Kiros said.
*Some have speculated that the assorted models are based on cloned humans, so maybe the original was human.

Wasn’t she given the human/cylon hybrid baby? I think we thought the other lady was her because she had a baby? Where is that storyline now?

Cally, by the way, is the one that “murdered” Boomer, as you saw in the recap.

Hopefully you’ve glommed onto this already, but Boomer is just one of two major characters who are the same model(an actor) of Cylon. Boomer was on Galactica, thought she was human, shot Adama, was killed by Cally, and ressurected on old Caprica in a new body. She joined with Caprica Six to convince the Cylons to write off the genocide of the human race as a mistake.

Then there is ANOTHER Boomer who always knew she was a Cylon (though she had the Galactica Boomer’s memories as well after the Galatica Boomer downloaded) and was charged with tricking Helo (who stayed behind on Caprica when the Galactica left) into falling into love with her and having a baby with her. She succeeded, but fell too far in love with him. She helped Starbuck and Helo get the arrow back to Galactica, and was promptly thrown in the brig. She had her baby, but it was taken away from her and told that it had died (which she still currently believes). She was in prison for a long time, but now Adama trusts her.

In addition to that, there are any number of other Cylon Sharon/Boomers running around. As far as we can tell, the models seem to each have an internal heirarchy where some members of that model series are more in command than others, but we don’t know much more than that.

Yes, Maya has Sharon’s baby; Callie’s baby is her own and unrelated. The storyline of the cylon hybrid is apparently dormant right now while we follow the events of the occupation and the insurgency. Presumably the baby is still with Maya and still safe - whether they are on New Caprica or with the remaining civilian survivors now in the care of the Pegasus, I don’t know.

They’re on New Caprica–we see them in the Season 2 Finale right before the Cylons return.

Ah - thanks for the clarification. I myself have just started watching the series, beginning as well with “The Story So Far”. I’d seen “Lay Down Your Burdens”, but didn’t recall that bit.
