The “What song is this?” or “Looking for a song…” threads pop up frequently, and we have a lot of people interested in music, so I hope you’ll stick around.
Poysyn,
You’re welcome. I hope that was the one. The ‘tip-off’ was “golden oldie”. But then I was in high school from 1969-1973. So my golden oldies could be entirely different
than your former co-worker.
And to Helena 330. I think I will stick around this Straight Dope Message board.
I’ve never been one to turn down a kind invitation.
One question though; what do most people use this board for?
It’s probably an odd question. I don’t want to sound like Violet Beauregarde
when she asked Willy Wonka; “what kind of gum do you got here?”
So all this time and still no answer?
Allow me to toss out Making Time as a possibility.
From the 1970s until about 2005, a Chicago weekly free newspaper included a column called the Straight Dope, in which a “Cecil Adams” (a nom de plume) would answer questions like “Was Jesus real?” The column continues today, but its uniqueness has been eclipsed by the Internet.
Meanwhile, this messageboard begain around 1999, mainly as a way to have many folks do Cecil’s job — answering each other’s factual questions. This continues today as the “General Questions” forum.
Over the past 15 years, the other forums — Cafe Society, etc. — have taken on lives of their own, and now serve many purposes for Dopers like yourself. But the original idea — to LEARN from each other — is still deeply ingrained in board culture.
